the story:
This day Kenny & Mike patched out of a PCMF1 crew's digital set-up, which at the time were relatively new to the taping scene. I have been unable to indentify who the owner of the gear was. These Greek shows had the standard 7PM, 5PM, 2 PM starts so this show started and finished in the daylight. That made for a condensed weekend and often for a late arrival at the campus. This recording is what Kenny brought back from the weekend although I would think a Beyer M88 recording was made by Tom Pinney as well.

As for this specific show, you get none of my 1986 signposts except great playing. Especially for the third day of a three day run Jerry's guitar treatments and vocals were tight. The quiet emotion of "Must Have Been the Roses" led the band into some great jamming and a cowboy song heavy first set. A nice "Cassidy" fronts another sweet Garcia enthused vocal take on "Row Jimmy". A call out "T right here in Berkeley" featured Bobby stealin' the women. Three cowboy tunes led to an unexpected "Stagger Lee" which was as well played as the rest of the show.

Second set opener "Fire on the Mountain" surprised the crowd as much as thrilled them. The "Samson & Delilah", "Ship of Fools" combination was pure delightful Dead. Jerry's vocal emotion and intonation was in the pocket, on this recording you can hear the drummers really sizzling the cymbals on top of the tune. "Women Are Smarter" was a doozy, with Weir accenting it with both vocals and whacked out guitar chords. A playful Space leads into "Truckin" with Jerry playing trumpet-like chords leading out of space. "GDTRFB" emerged after a brief jam at the end of "Truckin", led by the drummers and Jerry ripping throughout. "Stella Blue" also featured Jerry's singing dripping with emotion and THEN he played the solo. The crowd reacts with ecstatic pleasure and then they dropped into Lovelight. Just when it seems they were finished wowing the crowd, they came out and played a two song encore, finishing with a Crowd chanting for and getting Phil's "Box of Rain". From the sound of this recording it appears both band and fans had a blast during this afternoon performance in Berkeley.
