the tour story:
Fran and I had to fly back to Texas after the Rubber Bowl so we missed this show and this account is basically my memory of the phone call I received about 9PM CDT that evening (10 PM East coast). It was Mike Davis. "Man, it was so hot in the place, we didn't stay for Dylan/Petty". He then read to me the Dead's setlist, as I carefully wrote it down, since I would be sharing the news with several other people. I then had to ask, "why no Dylan?" "Well, it was so hot, and when we arrived for doors at Noon for the 2 PM show, we had no idea the Dead would play first then Dylan/Petty last since they did it the other way around at Rubber Bowl". "I tell you at least 15-20 thousand people were streaming out of there as Dylan started!"
Startled at this news, particularly as I thought the Dylan/Petty sets were pretty solid in Akron. I then asked, "so is this why you are calling me so early?", which of course it was. Mike then relayed a few points about the Dead show and the recording attempts. I am unsure as to why I have no Beyer M88 recording of this show, only this AKG c422 exists in my collection.
The first set was extremely short, only six songs, which tracks with most of the first sets on this tour, however at least 10 minutes less than the previous show- the Rubber Bowl- first set. Maybe the most interesting part of set 1 is the intro with Bobby and Phil talking to the audience via some wicked Healy sound effects talking about technical difficulties.
Second set had six songs pre-drums, another unusual happening. You can hear the band mentioning they would be on television at end of set 1. So maybe the six songs was due to that. "Cold Rain and Snow" opener then a "Fire on the Mountain" rarity being played without it's lead in tune Scarlet Begonias". Garcia really slos this one up. There are two lengthy solos in the 8 minute plus rendition. THey work their way through a fine "Samson and Delilah" then stop to get some gear straight again while Bob talks to the TV audience to start "Wheel". A working man's "Miracle" then drops into an oddly timed, set slot wise, but a very sweet version of "Uncle John's Band" ending into a lengthy drums. After 37 minutes, roughly six minutes per song, the band walked off with the afternoon sun blazing. A short space gave way to "Gimme Gimme Some Lovin" with Brent and Phil sharing the vocals. A quick 'GDTRFB' and even faster "Turn on your Lovelight" ended the 22 minute post drums.
