the tour story:
This is the second to last show before Jerry had his diabetic coma on July 26th of 1986. The RFK stadium show was a sold out event and the weather was about 100 degrees at show time. At the start of the show you hear some distortion then Phil and Jerry make fun of Bobby's "newfangled cordless rig" which had broken. Phil says, "Bobby's gonna have to use a cord like the rest of us". They get four songs into the set and Bob's rig needs another repair. "We'll get this puppy right" he says and the crowd cheered. I title these "equipment breaks" only if they are longer than one minute, this one was over two!
Of course, in the second set, Jerry's rig breaks and in a very unusual timing, they stop playing after two songs, fix his rig and move on. But Bob does say something. At which time soundman Dan Healy decided to play around with some crazy sound effects while Bob, Phil, and Jerry hassled the equipment crew.
Musically, the "Row Jimmy", "Cassidy", and "Let It Grow" are well played with some tasty Brent highlights on both the B3 and piano. The second set is Bobby heavy as we now know Jerry was barely able to stand onstage for one hour with his developing diabetes and the extreme heat close to 100 degrees on that day. Nevertheless, the set opener of "Saint Of Circumstance" was unusually placed. A very disjointed "Iko-Iko" preceded the equipment break and it sounds as if Jerry's amplifier stopped working. A very typical Grateful Dead songlist followed after another second set oddity, "Looks Like Rain" featuring the usual screaming by Bobby at its' end. The "Brokedown Palace" is possibly the worst version of it I've ever heard, but we all know why now, which we did not know then.
