Notes:
- Source ID 128746 (Mason B. Taylor) provides a few brief patches.
- Brief digital crackles in 'Space'.

16 bit 44.1 kHz FLAC Level 8

[This source shifts to a lesser quality transfer or source after a cut in Fire On The Mountain. The patch of Mason's tape here in FOTM repeats 0:34 of the song. The first part of Scarlet Fire before the cut was around 1.5% fast, more or less. See notes below.]

Post-FOTM cut SBD (shnid=34938):

Fix of shnid 3371

Not much of a fix here - I merged the two drums tracks together into
one to make set two seamless; for some reason drums had been split
across CDs 2 and 3. There's still a cut at 3.5 secs into drums. If
anyone has a good AUD patch for this show please take a stab at fixing
it. Also, the Scarlet>Fire patch could use some work, it's not
pitch-adjusted or cross-faded.

[This source for set 2 is better sounding than the newer #165179 transfer, after a large patch early on. See notes below.]

AUD (shnid=128746):

"Mason B. Taylor was a taper from Chicago that recorded concerts by many bands in the Chicagoland area and on Dead tours. He used a Nakamichi 550 with Nakamichi 300 mics with shotgun capsules for most of his earlier recordings. In later years he used Sony D-5 and Sony D-3 cassette recorders with Nakamichi 300 mics.

Mason captured spectacular musical moments and loved to share them with his closest friends. In honor of Mason and all the love he put into his recordings we are now able to share these moments with those who can appreciate them most.

As the shows get uploaded we would love for you to share your stories about the epic times the music evokes so we can all dial back into that moment when the magic was happening.

Thanks to Mason's family and his Chicago and Cleveland friends for opening up Mason's Jar"

Recorded By Mason Taylor on a Nakamichi 550 Cassette Deck,
on chrome tapes, with Nakamichi microphones.

Transferred on a Nak Cr7A.

Notes:

Jerry's guitar is mostly absent in the SBD recording during Cold Rain And Snow and Greatest Story Ever Told, fading in and out occasionally, but the matrix mix really helps with this, giving Jerry nearly full volume - a particularly good example of when a blend can work very well and fix issues. Great crowd levels too.

Joani Walker's recording (#89136, 12/19/07) patches most of the breaks between songs in Mason's AUD, and brief cuts at the beginning of Dancing In The Streets, near the beginning of Franklin's, and during Fire On The Mountain and He's Gone.

Almost all SBD-only tuning sections were trimmed to match the AUD cuts, helping to maintain a continuous AUD track.

Some brief right-channel static in Deal and Scarlet Begonias.

Several subtle clicks removed or reduced in Scarlet Begonias.

Very light EQ was used for most of set 2 only.

The Blackwood/Chastain/Gravel SBD source, #165179, shifts to a lesser quality transfer or source after a cut in Fire On The Mountain. The older Stephen/Tetzeli source, #34938, incidentally shifts to a better quality sound at this same point. While the lineage is partially unknown, #34938 sounds pretty similar to the Cassette Master transfer used for set 1 and the early part of set 2 in this matrix. It might even be a CM transfer the way it sounds. The levels of #34938 were increased to match in the matrix.

The speed of #34938 luckily appeared generally consistent with the speed of #165179 - for set 1, and for set 2 *after* a cut in Fire On The Mountain - and was not altered. The better part of Scarlet Fire in #165179 that was used for the matrix seems to have been inadvertently sped up around 1.5% or was not pitch corrected. The speed of this section was adjusted to match the following #34938 speed, using also the corrected AUD speed as a reference that was consistent with both sets. This was my best guess for what occurred here, being that it kind of sounded fast too.

The #165179 SBD source patches a dropout and a brief cut in Let It Grow and Drums in the #34938 SBD source.

A 35-second section in He's Gone gets repeated in the #34938 SBD source and was corrected.

Truckin' becomes slightly muffled sounding towards the end of the singing in the #34938 SBD, but the sound resolves after the cut in Drums. U.S. Blues gets a little muffled too.
