John Hartford's warm spirit and uniquely comic perspective dominated the three o'clock slot accompanied by his stellar string band consisting of former NBGB alumnus Mike Compton on mandolin, Bob Carlin on frailing banjo, Chris Sharp on flat top guitar and special guest Texas Shorty on fiddle. Hartford has been in poor physical health and he suffered from coughing fits while performing but otherwise his voice and sense of humor were in fine form. It's sad that his ailing condition keeps him from his penchant for soft-shoe tap-dancing while on stage but his keen sense of humor and the twinkle in his eye remains intact.
Hartford has a special way with audiences and this was no exception as a reverent awe came over the crowd during a series of well-delivered story-songs. With songs like "Watching the River Roll By," and "Good Old Boys" the music took on a sort of traditional funk feel as each song was propelled by a slow groove laid down by the rhythm section. Hartford would spin a yarn over this and then fiddle a break with Compton, Carlin, Sharp and Texas Shorty following with uniquely phrased turns of their own.
At the conclusion of the set Hartford gave his regrets that due a compromised immune condition he would be unable to shake hands or sign CDs but that he was willing to chat with folks.
