Special thanks to "The Dude" for lending me his Sony D7/8 to record all shows from this Bonnaroo weekend, as my battery power for my Teac DAP-20 deck had a short in it.
Taper notes:
For BARN252, I present a truly outstanding performance from a band at the top of their game (and take us forward into the 21st century after a long stretch of shows from the mid-to-late 90s) -- Medeski Martin and Wood's long late night (midnight start and the expectation was for the bands to play until sunrise or close to it) tent set from one of the of the 3 times that I attended the Bonnaroo festival. MMW are one of my all-time favorite bands (currently #6 on my list of most seen bands - despite not having seen them since 2018 and with the band) and although I have taped them over 50 times, my MMW BARN series postings have been few and far between (the last 2 MMW BARN series postings I made were in 2011). Now is my chance to start to correct this to some extent 13 years later (and 21 years after this show occurred).
Despite the boomy sound inside of the Bonnaroo tents, I was able to pull a crisp and clear recording (I secured a close -- but not too close -- location). The stereo imaging of this capture is particularly great (you may want to listen on some headphones!) -- Billy's drums and John's keys clearly are panned to specific channels and you can hear this loudly and clearly.
Often derided for being too "spacey" of a jazz-fusion band, this is "big festival" late night MMW, which meant they had to keep things upbeat and funky -- to keep people from literally falling asleep on their feet. They most definitely came to groove and get people dancing at this show.
I have no recollection of exactly why I missed the beginning of this show (likely due to the travel time it took me to get to this tent from another stage?), but we join the first set "in progress" -- amidst a short Billy Martin drum solo. This brings us right into a very funky groovin' "Pappy Check" with Luther Dickinson (of North Mississippi All Stars) providing great slide guitar licks to augment the groove. This brings us to "Retirement Song", an extreme live rarity (this is one of only 3 known performances of the tune) -- from their classic "Uninvisible" album, prominently featuring synth wind instruments and DJ Olive's turntables. This is another great funk workout once they dig in and once again this is a great listen on headphones once Billy Martin gets to the percussion breakdown as you can hear his percussion in beautiful stereo imaging.
To close out the first set, we get another funky performance -- of the stretching and contracting grooves of "Partido Alto" with Cyro Baptista and members of his band, Beat The Donkey, joining in for a lot of added percussion (including a whistle!) on this latin-flavored song.
Starting off the 2-hour plus 2nd set, we and the band get our groove on with "Sequel" and then head to a few minute outer space excursion (captained by the percussion and vocalizations of Cyro) before kicking in the slow groove of "The Dropper" -- which also features some well-integrated searing guitar leads from Luther -- that slowly picks up to a frenzied pace. A tasty bass solo starts out a grooving "Ten Dollar High" -- augmented by cat wails and scratches from DJ Olive that eventually simmers to a boil and ROCKS before Cyro makes his exit. After Cyro takes off, some spacey groovin' with just the core 3 (+DJ Olive) leads us to something you will all recognize -- MMW's take on Jimi Hendrix's "Fire", which is every bit as rocking as the original -- with Medeski's organ taking on the guitar parts. As they would typically do at the time, "Fire" segues thematically into the MMW original "Smoke" (because where there's "Smoke", there must be "Fire"). The final song from this section is "I Wanna Ride You", which is a bluesy organ-feature.
Next up, Billy announces the Antibalas horns, for what was their first live performance together (after the horns had backed up MMW on their Uninvisible album). Following performances of originals "Nocturnal Transmission" and "Where's Sly", things REALLY coalesce with an incredibly funky collaborative cover of Mulatu Astatqe's "Netsanet" that MUST be heard to be believed -- this is one of those songs that just gives and gives. That gives way to their very straightforward take on Thelonious Monk's "Bemsha Swing" (Medeski's piano and the horns REALLY shine here) which segues perfectly into Bob Marley's "Lively Up" -- just like on their 1993 album "It's a Jungle in Here".
After the cover pairing, we end the set with one of their most accessible/poppy songs -- "Uninvisible" which is a straightforward deep funk groove -- still burnished by the Antibalas horns.
During the encore break, you can really hear the place going wild for the band -- despite the fact that it was very very late (by this point prob close to 4AM), you can hear that it's still packed under the tent. The band sends us off with one of their typical (and beautiful) encores -- a cover of King Sunny Ade's lullaby "Moti-Mo" with subtle horn and guitar additions (once again from Luther and the Antibalas horns).
A couple of production notes worth mentioning: This is another recording that I started working on in 2012. Then I picked it up again in 2019 but there was a LOT of intrusive noise from the boisterous crowd near my mics("woo"-ing, whistles, etc), so I put it away again. Now in 2024, with a new tool in my toolbox (Spectralayers Pro), I was able to wipe away the loudest and most distracting of those whoops and woos and whistles (including some absolute chaos at the beginning of the second sent when someone who was too drunk or high blacked out on the tarp in front of my microphone stand and we had to get security to come take them away!) cleanly as if they never existed in the first place. This should be a vastly more satisfying listen than what I might have posted 5 years ago.
To wrap things up -- this is a killer recording of an incredible band at the top of their game -- in a special extra long late night performance before an adoring crowd with special guests and some rarely played songs!
Enjoy!

Enjoy!
