OldNeumanntapr Notes;
Usually I went to at least two shows in a run of three, but this one was an 'Up-And-Back' in one night, from Morro Bay up highway 101 to Oakland and back at 3:30 in the morning. This might have been the night that we limped our 1970 Datsun truck home from Oakland on three cylinders. It was about this same time that we were coming back from a Dead show late at night and I noticed that the truck was running really rough. It would stumble at lower speeds and flat out refuse to idle. I remember stopping for gas at a Shell station in Salinas and as I pulled into the station the truck shuddered and died. It took forever to get her started once the tank was full and I told Nikki, my ex wife, to take it in to our mechanic right away to have it checked out. Perry, Our mechanic, removed one of the spark plugs and was puzzled that the electrode was bent. After removing the oil pan he discovered that there was a hole in one of the pistons! No wonder the old girl was running a mite rough! Nikki remembered that a day or so previous to our trip to Oakland she heard a weird noise from the engine. What had happened was a screw from the Weber carburetor had come loose and gone through the engine while she was driving to work on highway 1. The noise she heard was the screw being forced out of the engine and out through the tail pipe! 'Ping Ping Ping'. Perry was able to remove the piston from below on the 1600 cc four cylinder and didn't have to remove the head to do so. After the new piston was installed it ran much better! (He has told that story to other customers for years!)
My friend John Lech shipped me his Nakamichi CM 300s, (which I would eventually purchase from him when he bought Audio Technica AT-853a stealth mics), because all I had at the time was my Superscope EC7 cardioids. He might not have had the shotgun capsules yet because I have it in my notes that I used the CP 1 cardioid capsules. He had me run his Aiwa XD-X1 DAT recorder, but I patched it out of my D6. I don't know if the DAT was ever transferred.
It was a real treat to hear the Rolling Stones song 'The Last Time', which had not been performed since 1965. Unfortunately the first few notes are clipped because of the tape flip after 'Queen Jane'. I think several tapers had that same problem. They didn't seem to be doing 'Stagger Lee' as much anymore by 1990, (Deadbase listed seven performances from 1990), so that was nice to hear, as was Brent's 'Just A Little Light.' I was devastated when he OD'd later in the summer of 1990. What a tragic loss.
