Taper Notes:
Continuing my New Orleans Jazzfest appreciation series with BARN38, I'm offering up this decidedly non-New Orleans flavored music, from a Sunday night post-Funky Meters Jazzfest-closing throwdown at Tipitina's.  Steve Kimock had been knocking my socks off in various combinations for years at this point.  This LATE night show (probably started after 2AM) was my first opportunity to catch this particular lineup.  This incarnation of the Steve Kimock Band had definitely had some opportunity to gel at this point, and it shows at this show.  Start to finish, this set is filled with incredible music from a super tight band.  Every song is long and deep.  But unlike many bands that play in New Orleans during Jazzfest, Steve Kimock didn't nod at all to what town he was in, or the fact that it was Jazzfest (especially considering the fact that Cissy Strut was a part of this band's repetorie, though The Funky Meters did play this song just 3-4 hours before on the same stage).

KVHW may have been my favorite Kimock band, but this band is pretty spectacular.  Bobby Vega was still playing with them at this point.  Mitch Stein was great at helping push Steve to the next level, and Rodney Holmes.  Yes, Rodney Holmes.  Let's say it again -- RODNEY HOLMES.  The man could be one of the best drummers on the planet.  He will blow your mind -- just give a listen to his kickin' drum solo in "It's Up To You" and you'll be sold!

I remember being at this show and being SO excited at the music that was being made that after the 1st set I went to a pay phone in the venue (this was before the era of cellphones, mostly) and called my friend back in NYC (mind you this must've been around 4AM, NYC time) just to rave about how incredible the music was.  Give a listen -- you'll want to phone all of your friends to let them know how spectacular this music is too.  :-)

Enjoy!

Scott
