----------
As my very first seed, I had undertaken a couple of years ago to address some of the flaws on the Matrix that originally circulated. While I was reasonably successful, experience is a good teacher and in the intervening years I had also discovered additional problems with the original Matrix seed. Because this is one of my favorite shows, I decided to have another go at it. As it stands now, unless somebody uncovers another original Matrix DAT, that this is likely to be the most complete and carefully edited version of this show available.
----------
Known issues in this seed:
Tracking errors (mostly minor) were fixed throughout; SHNTool used to repair sector boundaries after retracking.
Some gentle EQ was applied to both ends: +3 dB at 60 Hz (rising to +6 dB at 20 Hz) and +1.5 dB at 10k Hz.
Drums and space are seamless, with space now moved to disk 3.
The following patches were provided by Stephen Porter's audience cassette, editing in Peak:
1. Crowd noise before first set and the first few notes of Iko restored, total of about 0:42.
2. Inexplicably, in Stagger Lee, the lyric "Went down to DeLyon's CLUB in Billy DeLyon's blood" contained a splice rendering it "Went down to DeLyon's SAID in Billy ..." This is mysterious because Garcia didn't sing that lyric incorrectly. The line is now patched correctly; see also #5 below.
3. A segment of about 0:25 was missing from the end of To Lay Me Down and the beginning of Let It Grow, previously covered by a slick splice that was nonetheless an elision. That segment is now intact, though there is a brief (< 0:01) level drop in the first few seconds of Let It Grow.
4. Let It Grow is now complete to the end, patched beginning at 9:22.
5. Inexplicably, the first half of the second line of Scarlet Begonias ("Not a chill to the winter") had been patched from a later part of the Matrix ("She was too pat to open"). This is mysterious because Garcia didn't sing that lyric incorrectly. The line is now patched correctly.
6. Several seconds were missing in the transition from GDTRFB to I Need a Miracle. That missing segment is now restored.

Nice seed! Just curious what you used for the EQ.

Just so you all know, I feel that this show and also 3-20-86 are what made the Hampton mystique and what set up The Warlocks. I was at this show, and the energy was a cosmic force that even Jerry had a heavy time corraling. Just an outrageous night in an outrageous time of my life! Peace!

Peter e-mailed me the following additional source info about the aud patch: "Steve's cassette is the same one I used a couple of years ago. He used a D5 and Nak 300/CP4 mics. . . His masters were played on my Teac Z-5000 deck, and recorded on my Nakamichi BX-300. The same BX-300 was used to record snippets on a Tascam CDW-700 and then imported into Peak, where all editing was performed."

I just downloaded this from archive.org and I am skeptical that it is really a matrix. Frequency analysis shows a frequency roll-off beginning in the 16-17kHz range and there appears to be a pilot tone at ~19kHz. In other words, I think this is an FM source. My old cassette of this show is definitely an FM source. Would anyone care to comment?

FWIW, the casette I used to have of this show was labelled as having been source from the FM signal they broadcast at the arena sometimes. I don't think this show was broadcast live on any radio station.

I?m pretty convinced that this was not a regular FM broadcast, as jb just said I?m certain this is one Healy?s broadcasts which he did for a while in a limited range around the arena.

Healy was definitely doing an FM broadcast to the hallway monitors at this Hampton run. I have a tape of 3/26/88 which was made this way, and you can even hear static as the taper adjusts the frequency.

While using this source to upgrade the audio stream of a set2 dvd, I found two edits where music is inextricably missing: (1)6.8 seconds between end of Scarlet and beginning of Fire (approximately 1 measure of music); and (2) at 26 seconds before the start of the 3rd verse in Eyes, there is approximately 26 seconds of the solo before the final verse missing.
