Nathan says that he does not recall taping this show or anything about the tapes. They may have been given to him by someone, and they may not be the masters (although they are clearly marked "master"). The recording is, however, clear and crisp, with better highs than either SHNID 19901 or 157028/29.
Tape flips at the end of Hard They Come, and in the middle of Tangled Up, were patched with SHNID 157028 which runs at very nearly the same speed as this recording.
The Type III FeCr cassette presented a conundrum: Did any portable decks in 1981 support FeCr tapes? If so, did they use 70 μs or 120 μs eq when recording? If not, did the taper select Type I or Type II, with the same question about the eq? If nothing else, the deck would have defaulted to Type I (120 μs), even though Sony recommended playing these tapes back as type II (70 μs). These cassettes lack a notch to tell the playback deck to do so, however. And so on...
After listening and thinking about it, I let the tapes play back as Type I and then decoded them for Dolby B. Are they too bright? Maybe, but it is nice to near the high hat clearly. If this bothers you, just turn down the treble a bit.
Thanks to Joe Jupile and David Minches for their input on the recording, and of course to Nathan for having this cassette in the first place.
Enjoy!
