02. tuning
03. My Guitar Wants To Kill Your Mama
04. Hopscotch
05. Nasty Habits
06. Under You
This is a curious item, uncirculated as of January 2026. It comes from a cassette that belonged to Bill Bradt who owned the Powerhouse Brewery in Sebastapol, CA, but how he got it is a mystery. Side A of the cassette contained previously circulating studio demos and other material, including the Monkey Hill session, and was labeled "11/04/86" or possibly "05." Side B, which was unlabeled, contained these tracks, which appear to be a fragment of a concert. But which one?
There are a couple of clues. The first is that the show features Willie Bonham but not Matt Zekala, which likely dates it to sometime in 1986. The second comes at the beginning of the tuning track when Doug Haxall thanks Scott from Pure Instinct for sitting in. Pure Instinct was a duo formed by Scott Furda and Sean O'Brien, and dreamspeak was their backing band for a brief period. Scott sat in with dreamspeak perhaps a couple of times, although memories are hazy. Former band members have speculated that this is most likely from the 1986 show at My Father's Place in Old Roslyn, NY, but unfortunately that date of that performance is not known.
The November 4 days is also a puzzle. The Monkey Hill demos on side A of the cassette date from mid 1986. These tracks were on side B, however, after some other studio materials. So why the November date? Unknown, but it's as good a date as any to identify this recording.
Enjoy!
