notes from the knob master Alan Bershaw:
These mixes are in stereo, but just slightly. I did minor panning of each channel, with the guitars & bass/drums channel’s slightly split. Ditto for the vocal channel (which contains a lot of ambience) and the ambient mic channel. I thought it sounded a little better than straight mono. Restored some missing low end to the bass/drums channel, raised a few buried vocals and miscellaneous other tweaks. The Dry Mix only utilizes the ambient mic between songs. The Wet Mix utilizes the ambient mic throughout (like a matrix mix), but that mic channel doesn't start working until a few minutes into Hideaway, so even the wet mix is dry during the 1st 5 minutes of the early show. I do the dry mixes mainly to enjoy the crispy guitar definition, but the wet mix is the better overall listening experience.
Other tidbits of interest is that these shows are the East Coast debut of SOSF. They also goof on Michael Gaimen a bit during the early show. Apparently his dad was there, too. Cipollina is the primary point of interest on these shows. He smokes throughout! Barry Finnerty (another great guitar player from San Francisco who was living in NYC doing sessions at the time) guests on "Stormy Monday." He's the one kicking ass through most of that tune, until John's super-gnarly solo near the end. The "Cobra-> Mona" that ends the late show is freakin' great! Alan
