Alan Bershaw's Notes (June 2021):
This is a significant upgrade to the file set I first uploaded a month or so ago. The biggest difference is that this is now speed corrected. I discovered that my first generation cassettes were running quite slow, which plagued my previous upload, so toss that and get this. I also took the opportunity to seamlessly patch in the missing 5 minutes at the beginning of Peter Rowan's second set that was not recorded by this taper.
The details on what equipment was used are long gone, but the quality is reasonably good capturing the enthusiastic audience as well as the musicians up close. Player's Tavern was a tiny room with a noisy bar room atmosphere so audience noise was unavoidable. All I recall about the taper is that he was from Norwalk, CT (like me) and was a year or two younger than the rest of us. He was still in high school and underage, so we weren't sure he would get in. This is when the drinking age was 18, and nobody was checking IDs, so he got in quite easily.
Everywhere it seems, this night is notated as an early and late show, but it was just one marathon show with Peter Rowan (solo) and Robert Hunter (with Larry Klein on bass) alternating on stage. The house was not emptied after Hunter's first set, but a short break was announced.
During the break, most of our entourage strolled outside to indulge, which explains why the first 5 minutes of Peter Rowan's second set was not recorded. That missing sequence is seamlessly patched in from Rob Berger's Nak Dragon transfer of Bob McFarland's master. Unlike that particular master, which is also quite good considering the noisy environment, this recording did not utilize automatic level controls, so it has a bit better dynamic range and stereo separation.
