These tapes came to me from the collection of Marc Millman, but upon
seeing the tapes, I immediately recognized Dave Nolan's delicate script
on the J-cards and tape labels. I believe this is Dave's recording that
Marc ended up with somehow; Marc was a regular at the Wetlands, and
would frequently get patches from the soundboard or the DJ booth.
Dave was the first official employee of the Wetlands Preserve, serving
as the venue's sound engineer, DJ, and occasional lighting technician
during the venue's entire 13-year existence. He recorded a large portion
of the shows he worked, documenting each one in incredibly tiny yet
legible handwriting. I had the good fortune of visited Dave's apartment
in the late 90's to comb through his vast archives, so I've seen a
number of his tapes.
Unfortunately, the first half of set 1 is missing from this recording.
Dave's first tape is labeled "...Set I", implying that there may just be
a "Set I..." somewhere. However, since Dave's untimely passing in 2010,
his tapes have yet to surface, and the first five songs of this
recording may simply be lost.
This show is, however, available as Live Trax Vol. 20, so Dave's
recording is presented here mostly as a historical document. It does
include an aborted take on Cry Freedom, which does not appear on the
official release.
