Source: 10-inch 33-rpm flexi disc > (possible direct transfer?) > 7-inch Reel, via the John Pape Collection, dubbed in the mid-70's.
Transfer: Scotch 207 Reel > Technics 1506 > Komplete-6 interface > Audacity 2448 capture > Izotope-RX > Wavelab > CD-Wave (24bit) > TLH > FLAC 2448 tagged. Andrew F, July 2026.
Notes:
- This transcription of the flexi-disc is an audio improvement over those found in ID's 5418 & 125462.
- Izotope-RX was used for light de-hum & de-crackle, however ticks & warbles can still be heard due to the fragile nature of the flexi-disc.
- The flexi-disc was included with first editions of Hank Harrison's 1973 publication, "The Dead Book: A Social History of the Grateful Dead".
- THANKS to Doug Rice for the expert transfer to WAV from old shedding, mildewed reels!
Here's the text from the book's page accompanying the flexi-disc:
Opposite is a 33 1/3 RPM soundsheet, to be played on both sides. For best results, place the shoundsheet on top of another record when playing.
This recording presents the voice of Neal Cassady at the grand opening of the Straight Theater in September 1967 [sic?]. Neal went to Mexico shortly after this recording was made, and he never returned.
It is significant that the audience, consisting mostly of young people from Haight Street, did not know who he was and were jeering him from the floor.
This recording is an edited version of a longer performance. The Grateful Dead are in the background making Prankster music and the totality is reminiscent of the acid tests.
If you wish to preserve the fidelity of this recording, you must convert it to tape since the acetate is not a permanent medium and tends to decay.
