Mastering Notes:
The 24/48 FLACs were converted to WAV with Flac v1.1.0 (thanks MikeW) and opened in WaveLab.  The first step was to remove as much of the noise floor as I could with Waves X-Noise.  X-Noise was applied to both files and rendered @ 24/96.  The next step was a 2-band EQ where I rolled off below 40Hz, and boosted the top end @ 4200 2dB with a Q of 0.5.  Then Blue Tubes FA770 Compressor, BBE Sonic Maximizer was next (lo contour set at 3.5, and the top end knob set at 2.5.  Finally, the Blue Tubes .  It was downsampled with the 192KHz Stereo Resampler and rendered at 16-bit.  The 2 sides of the cassette were then rendered into 1 large .WAV file, downsampled with the 192KHz Stereo Resampler and rendered at 16-bit.  Tracking was done with CD-Wav then converted to SHNv3 (seek tables appended).

The police arrested the taper during set break for smoking, so set 2 is not available from this source.
Inside the tape cover: "The night of molestation by the police. AAgghh!!"

The Master Cassette is labeled "Keene, NH I 2/22/90 master SBD". It does not give any more specifics.

Venue was a small college gym, common for the era. A search for facitities at Keene State College lists a "Spaulding Gymnasium".

Bob Smith (a person known to the taper) gives the intro.

It's so good, makes you wonder what they played in Set II... ;)

i think the actual date for this is 2/19/90, for those of you interested in that kind of thing
Date: 11/04/2003
Actually....the date is what is listed on the TAPERS MASTER CASSETTE that was used to transfer this show....If one were to look at all the info in regards to the show, you'll notice that most of the "resources" also note that the 2-19 date is "uncertain"....We have also done very exhausting research on these shows' dates/setlists before releasing them.

There was no second set at this show. According the the Phish Companion and the Mockingbird Foundation someone pulled the fire alarm prematurely ending the show.

we mulled over this for a little bit when working on it, and we decided that the companion was wrong. this is a scan from the MASTER CASSETTE that Marmar mentioned, and i think that it clearly shows that the show was on 2.22.90 and that there was a second set played, the taper just had to spend it in the pokey. The fire alarm show was probably a different show.

i should also add that it sounds fantastic, and is a very good set.

2/22/90 is the correct date, but the show actually took place in a small Student Union on the corner of Keene St.'s campus that is no longer there (the building has been renovated, but is still part of the college), not in a gymnasuim.

I spoke with John about this show. He clearly remembers being arrested during set break at this show. John Paluska bailed him out of jail. This show is defintitely 2/22/90.

However, he did mention that the fire alarm may have been pulled at this show. He remembers a show from this time frame that had the 2nd set canceled due to a fire alarm.

As for being in a gymnasium or the Student Union. We have no other info. I don't remember it at all. John remembers it as a gym, but it's been 13 years and we seen alot of shows in college halls and gyms back then... and not always in the most sober conditions...

John may not remember it, but I do, and up until this year lived 15 minutes from the building that was the student union where it was played in 1990.

As part of the Old School Phish Project, I have been scanning the tape covers, ticket stubs (if I have them) and the "Phish Update" newsletters (if I have them).

If you are interested, you can find them here:
http://guyforget.net/phishteam/oldschool_extras/

Each show has it's own folder. All the shows released so far are out there.
I've also included the MD5s and TXT files.

If you distribute these SHNs, please include these extras.

You can visit this forum for comments made during the transfer/mastering/listening process:

I was at that show and yes indeed it took place on 2/22/90 My ticket stub reads,PHISH in the Mable Brown Room At Keene State Admission $7.00 In fact all music in the building was cancled in the building for the rest of the night. Another Vermont band called Lambsbread was also playing in the same building downstairs. Phish played upstairs in a small gym type room. It was really sweet.
I drove about 3 hours up from Mass. with 2 friends who I just pumped about how great and different this band is they were about to see. During intermission when we were at the car we could see and hear the comotion, but were told shortly there after we could all return. Once back in and every one was back at there place, the gig was cancled. Who relly knows, but it was my impression that once the authorities saw and smelled what was going on up and down stairs that was that.

I too was at this show and taped out of the board. There was no second set for several reasons which included a fire alarm activation and people smoking in the building. Like the giant retard I can sometimes be, I let my best friend borrow my master tape when we got home so he could make a copy. Instead, he first listened to it on his mother's shitty $20 Walkman and the tape got CHOWED beyond belief. So John, how's about droppin' me an email so I can hook up with a copy of yours?
