According to a recent Entertainment Weekly article, this is Page's most memorable show
*** Tracking Notes:
Note that as tracked, disc 2 requires an 80 minute disc. You may move Harry Hood and
Tweezer Reprise to disc 3 if you wish to use 74 minute discs. I choose to use an 80 minute
CD-R for disc 2 to maintain the consistancy of the second set (and since it times out so darn
perfect for an 80 minute disc!)
*** General Notes:
This source is a purported SBD/Aud matrix > cass/0 > DAT (as noted at
http://www.freedumb.net/sbd/sbdlist.html), however this lineage is questionable.
There is a cut at 45:07 in the first set, however this sounds like a DAT cut or digi dropout,
as opposed to an analog tape flip (I left this cut as it existed from the original DAE,
rather than editing, because it occurs during a song (Scent of a Mule). Another reason I
question the analog generation is because there is zero perceptible analog hiss anywhere
in this recording. Also, analog tapes tend to stretch as they are used, and people
usually get between 46 and 48 minutes per side of a 90 minute tape. 45:07 is considered
an odd place for an analog flip to occur. Also, there is no noticeable cut at around the
90 minute mark in the show (where the next tape flip should occur).
As for my skepticism for the SBD/AUD matrix, there are moments when I would swear this source
is true, however the noticeable echo and reverb normally associated with audience tapes from
indoor arenas (MSG in this case) is quite noticible. If this is not an SBD/Aud Matrix, this
source would likely be an FOB, since the audio presence is very "up front." There is a well
circulated FOB Schoeps CMC3/mk4 source from 12/29/94. This 12/30/94 source may very well be
from the same rig and taper, however this is pure speculation.
*** Editing Notes:
Removed cut at the end of Poor Heart (this was at the 63:13 mark in the show, probably from the
original DAT > CD conversion since the next track (Tweezer) is over 21 minutes in length, and thus
would put the total disc time over 74 minutes.
Removed a .5 second skip at the end of Poor Heart, probably a DAE artifact since this would be at
the end of the CD-R that was EAC-ed.
Removed the fade and cut between YEM and Purple Rain (end of disc 2 on the original DAE)
Removed the cut during the crowd noise between Tweezer Reprise and Frankenstein (79:16). This cut
sounds as if it came from the master DAT (perhaps the taper stopped his/her deck between set II
and the encore).

Well, I don't think this is really a matrix tape, but jesus it is one *killer* FOB! Very sweet tape for such a big venue.

no way this is a matrix mix. I'm even having doubts about this being FOB but perhaps a shotgun section tape.

I would bet large sums of money that this is not an audience tape. Matrix? Likely. But there is DEFINITELY a soundboard feed here.

I had never heard this source before, but I'm transferring the FOB Schoeps mk4(ORTF)>kc5>cmc5>sxm2>ad500e>d10proII source of this show right now so I figured I'd compare. The source I'm transferring is much more 'upfront' sounding than this purported SBD/matrix. I tend to agree w/ Bill that this is an OTS shotgun (or similar) source. There is noticable venue reverb and the bass is not defined enough for me to truly beleive this is a matrix. The vocals are *very* clear, but that is typical of a shotgun tape.
Regardless, I think the FOB's I'm about to seed smoke these (more upfront and open sounding and much warmer--I find these 'matrix' tapes somewhat harsh on the ear) so hopefully it will make this debate a moot point.

I think that the track times for the 2nd disc are messed up. YEM says 12:12 but really is 23:15. ALso, tweezer says 23:18 but should really be 23:22.

You're right about YEM (s/b 23:15) but the Tweezer track time is correct at 23:15.
Also, this show can be burned cleanly on 2 CDs (1x74 + 1x80) by moving Sample to the end of D1.

I have a tendency to believe that this may be an FM Simulcast source....That's why it kinda sounds "squished" and why the audience sounds so "up front" in the mix. I'd be willing to bet the farm on it...do a frequency analysis on it and compare it to any other FM>Cass show you may have...I bet the noise fingerprints are pretty darn close (look around the 10-15kHz range...) That would also explain why Cactus sounds thin on the very low end of his sound...
