There is a pretty stark difference between the two sources. the Dick cassette source is noticably muddier and generally not as clean. Still sounds decent, though.

Okay this is a recent one that purports to be speed corrected:
http://db.etree.org/shninfo_detail.php?shnid=21539
Can anyone familiar with both assert his preference?
Or is the new one obviously better? Or not?

I'd say its a toss-up. While this one has a known lineage, the Dick cassette source is just not as crisp as the Gans source. The Gans source is beautiful. It's too bad there isn't a complete version from his transcription, because that would be the definitive version. As for #21539, I'd say it sounds a little better than the Dick portion of this show, but the patch source on that one sounds worse than the Dick source here.

Another thing I should add is that the source used to patch Nobody's Fault was not speed corrected, and the difference is distinct as it goes from the Dick tape to the patch. The patched material is quite sped-up.

Thanks for the info. I take all that to mean, go for the first disc of this source, but the other two from 21539.

This is an upgrade from start to finish. I've spent a couple months comparing these side by side, I'll post my notes eventually. Using the term "muddy" to describe the Dick sourced part of this is an exaggeration. People put a lot of time and effort into seeding shows and then come the negative comments. Enjoy this for the beautiful music that it is and don't get hung up on a 30 second patch that isn't speed corrected. Please fix it and re-seed it if it will improve your listening pleasure.
I would compare the transitions between the main and patch sources to a trip to the dentist to have a tooth pulled. The quality of the main source, however, is quite good.

After having collected about 8 different versions of this over the years - dating from an analog copy back in the mid-70's - this is the best version I've heard to-date and the one I would recommend obtaining. Kudos to all involved in putting it together.
All other digital versions of China>Rider I've heard have static mirroring Garcia's guitar in spots, while this one is clean. As to the complaints that the one-gen portion is "muddy," I'm not finding it all that much different from the 1st 45 minutes, frankly. My guess - based upon my ancient cassette version that is actually quite good as well as every other version I've heard of this show - is that the MRs of this show just aren't as crisp and clean as the MR sources from the two shows that follow it.
As to the issue of speed-correcting the patches, yes they are a little fast, but not all THAT bad. All in all, I really like this version and doubt we'll hear anything superior unless and until Jeff Norman takes a crack at it and it's released.
