Jim Powell's notes:
There are conflicting reports whether the SBD master is on cassettes or
reels, but it sounds like it would have to be reels.
The last 26 seconds of Here Comes Sunshine is missing on our copy of the
SBD and is patched in using an AUD master from a cassette copy of
unknown low generation.
22 seconds in Eyes Of The World are patched from this AUD source also.
The 22-second cut in Eyes looks like a cassette tape flip introduced
when the reels were transcribed to 1st gen cassette. The missing
conclusion of Here Comes Sunshine is harder to account for on this
hypothesis, but there seems a reasonable chance that both missing
segments are intact on the master reels. Meanwhile, this tree.
First set highlights include TLEO, Row Jimmy, GSET and China Cat >
Rider. The Here Comes Sunshine times almost 16 minutes, is the longest
known on circulating tape and probably the best. The Dark Star is the
third longest known at 43:28, and one of the all time best. It is the
fraternal twin of 11/11/73.D
Dave Greenberg did the patches. David Gans supplied DATs of the 1st gen
cassette SBD and Jim Powell instigated the project, supplied the AUD
cassette used to patch the SBD's defects, and wrote this note.

1. You can put the entire first set on an 80 minutes disc, ruinning 75:45. There are no fades in d1t10 or d2t01, so you can just add d2t01-03 to the end of d1.

2. It is my opinion that the AUD source used for these patches sounds terrible. I know the rigs weren't as sophisticated back then as they are now, but according to deadlists.com a very good AUD exists containing the portions that this seed requires for patches. I'm wondering if they're listening to the same AUD that was used to patch this show, and are therefore generous in their rating of the source, or if there's a better AUD that could be used for the patches. I know it's only around 45 seconds, but it's in two of the best songs (not counting the Dark Star) in the show.

At least d3t2 (Eyes) has digital pops on from about 11 minutes to the end of track. Sounds like improper CD rip. Great show.

I agree with the previous poster about
the terrible patches done to this great
show.
I have fixed the Sunshine and Eyes with
portions of the 11/30/73 show and they
redeem an otherwise great show.

I could see how some would dislike these patches because they are jarring, but for some reason I like them a lot. I get a real kick out of them, they're like you're on Splash Mountain, you're having a real good time, oops! You gotta little more water on you than you expected.

At least it makes it complete. I seem to recall a better AUD out there which could do the trick (??). But patching from a different show?? What on earth for?? Please do not circulate a version with pieces of 11/30 stuck in just for smoother patches.

I wholeheartedly agree with Scotty. I believe shows should be as good-sounding AND as accurate as possible, and don't believe you should compromise the latter to get the former. That said, I wonder if you did find a better aud to patch the end of "Sunshine" if it would lose a little bit of the charm. But, hey, I also upgrade to full soundboards when they become available, so I guess ultimately aud patches are expendable. But I do think patches provide atmosphere and psychedelia, not unlike what they were going for in "Anthem."
