I've always regarded the second half of this show, starting with the "china cat" as unequivicabley one of the greatest shows of all time. From that point on, every song, with maybe the exception of the "Casey Jones", is the quintesential bestest version ever.

I beleive that a high quality version of this show exists somewhere because, "Uncle John's Band" from this show was used as a bonus track on the (Rhino issue?) expanded and remastered WORKINGMAN'S DEAD cd and it sounds very clean.
Where did Rhino they get this clean version? If anybody knows where to get it, PLEASE let me know.
But, the Rhino issue wrongly has the date as 23 Dec 1970. To add to the confusion, there used to be a bootleg record of this concert see http://www.livecollection.net/liveset/dead/dead_bootlegs.htm
This bootleg album cover ALSO had the date and location wrong: Fillmore West in August 19th 1971. Anyway, Im glad the archivists have the date/location correct. I loved this concert when I was a teen and I still love it.

I think you're getting confused with the bonus tracks on the American Beauty reissue, which has Till The Morning Comes from 10/4/70.
As far as I am aware, the dating for UJB for 12/23/70 IS correct - this song has circulated in good quality as part of a four-song partial tape from that date for several years.

As for the question where did Rhino get the clean version - well the remasters were done by the Vaultmeisters so of course the 10/4/70 TTMC comes from there.

Interesting factoid. Janis Joplin died this night about the same time the dead were playing cold rain and snow.

No she had already passed away prior to the show. Her death was rumoured and then confirmed backstage before they played, as noted in McNally's book.
