Me and My Uncle > Big River is patched by Charlie Miller, with this lineage:
FOB AUD > Senn ME80 > MC> DAT > CDR
Date: 06/05/2002
This show is a Matrix like I'm a wildebeest. It's an audience recording, maybe an FOB but I'm guessing it's not, and of B quality in any case. There is no other Matrix anywhere with sound so distant, and bass so preposterously boomy, as this. It raises the obvious question of where it was mislabeled -- either by the original taper who knew he was lying, or by somebody further down the line who didn't know better. Either is inexcusable.

I seeded this show from discs provided by Charlie Miller. The source information listed is what Charlie provided to me when he B+P'ed me the discs. I agree with Peter Braverman about the distant sound and boominess of this show compared to other matrix recordings. The same question of the validity of this being a matrix recording was raised on BUDD and Charlie Miller insisted that it is a matrix recording. There has been no chicanery on my part (EAC > MKW > SHNv3) and I cannot speak for Charlie, but I do not believe he would intentionally be deceptive.

As far as I can hear on listening to various Matrix mixes, Healy must have played with it a lot with er, mixed results. There's at least one I've found personally hard to listen to (12/31/88 I think?).

The Capital Centre was famous for boomy acoustics. Though the bass on this recording is massive, it is not distorted when played on a high quality amp/speaker set up.

I know both DES and Charlie, and I do not believe either is deceptive. I gather that neither of them made the original recording. But I stand by my point: this is not a Matrix. The sound on this recording is, to my ears, nothing like that of the other 30+ Matrixes in my collection. However, it is very much like other B-quality audience recordings I've heard from the Cap Centre and other Enormo-domes along the east coast. As for the bass, yes, it's "massive," if that appeals to you, but it sure doesn't sound anything like what I remember from shows I saw, and it's missing virtually the entire mid-bass. I said it was "boomy," and it is, much more so than the better quality audience recordings out there, to say nothing of the far superior Matrixes. The amp/speaker comment is a red herring; it has nothing to do with the provenance of the recording, and given that I review high-end components for a leading magazine, my guess is that my system is up to the task. I'm not trying to be a jerk, but if you really think this is a Matrix, what can I say except that we disagree. I'm just the messenger, folks.

I just listened to this and it is in no way a sbd of any kind. It isn't even a FOB....Sorry for any confusion...cm

So Charlie, before I make any updates to the entry, do you know anything for sure about the remainder of the lineage? Like, is it still known it's from a MC, or should I label it AUD> ?> ? Thanks for any guidance!

It is my opinion that this version of the cap center show on Tol's FTP site is not a SBD/AUD Matrix. I think it is clearly a good audience recording. There seems to be a lot of this going around but the vocals, in my mind, clearly reveal that this is %100 aud. Just thought I'd let you know what my ears thought, so you could change the text file info, if you agreed. I know there are many people who think that great auds might be a matrix recording and I think you may have been given these and told the same. They are still great recordings of a great show... Have a good weekend and thanks for the music...

As I remember from the show the place was large. 100,000 people were estimated and the FOB was rather far from the stage. I was behind the Board most of the night because there was space to dance there. It sounds like I was at the show with the SBD mixed in.

Jerry did a leg kick this night. I never saw the fat man move so much.

100,000 people - ? IMHO - There is no indoor facility (outside of the Superdome in NOLA.) that holds near that amount of people inside or out - I saw the boys 120+ times and in MANY different venues and even Giants stadium was not even close to 100,000 people - What did you say you were smokin that night ;)- ~~~~ ? Sorry , just a smart-ass, cynical observation.

**BTW - I agree that this is no Matrix or FOB, but I had never heard this show at all ( Ripple enc. !!), so thanks for the seed nonetheless !!

The Crapital Centre in Landfill,MD had the worst acoustics in the known world! It held at the very most 20,000.I've only missed 1 show there. They blew the beast up last month for a stip mall.Which will have better acoustics, less the memories.I dont believe a sb of this show is yet available.

I still say The Rosemont in Chi-Town has the worst...sound....ever....

Can?t remember who the taper was but this circulating AUD seems to be the true one discussed here: SennME80>MC>DAT>ZA2>Soundforge Remaster>CDWave>SHN.
I?ll see if i can find some more info on who taped it from reliable sources.

These were some of the worst sounding shows I ever saw, which is too bad because the shows smoked. I don't know if Healy had an off week, or what. There was actually a review in the Washington Post after 9/2 complaining about the lack of backbeat (a musical, not acoustic criticism)and I *swear* that Healy answered that by over-miking the snare drums. The sound *was* distorted in the arena that week: bass and vocals "cracked" throughout, so any accurate tapes will communicate that. I've been working on seeding some new masters of these shows, and they'll get posted if a third-party thinks they're better than what's out of here. They're all NAK 100 > D-5. My new version sounds less distorted, to my ears.

I was at this show and there was easily 100,000 people in attendance, probably 200,000. I sat in the nose bleed and the sound was fantastic!

"Visit him once and you knew you'd be back, over and over
and over and over again."

Isn't it amazing how they can fit 200,000 people in a hockey arena that holds 18,000-------cm

BTW, Thanks Charlie for the recent SBDS of these Cap Center shows. It's nice to have listenable copies of this memorable run.

capacity at this venue is max 20,000 not 100,000,certainly not 200,000...what ARE you smoking? rolled up carpet? this is NOT a European soccer stadium,it is a hockey rink.
