a few thoughts on this source and the previously circulating Sony ECM 260F source.
I wanted to use the Sony ECM 260F source to patch the small spot of static/digi-noise in Harry Hood. When I had both sources open side by side, I noticed a few things:
1) the Sony ECM 260F source was clearly recorded with pre-emphasis, but was never de-emphasized. When I de-emphasized the Sony ECM 260F source, it sounded the same as this NAK 100 shotgun source.
2) the Sony ECM 260F source has the same static at the same place in Harry Hood.
These two things lead me to believe that this source and the Sony ECM 260F are actually the same source. Either Eliot's DAT is mislabeled, or the previously circulating Sony ECM 260F source is mislabeled. I stuck with the NAK 100 shotgun source for this transfer, because that is how Eliot's DAT is labeled.
With this in mind, this new transfer is still superior to the previously circulating Sony ECM 260F source, primarily because this transfer has been de-emphasized. Because of the pre-emphasis, the Sony ECM 260F source has way to much high-end and it sounds harsh. That's the big reason, this sounds better because it has been de-emphasized. other reasons to get this new transfer include (1) complete, full, and well documented transfer lineage and (2) tagged FLAC files are smaller and more convenient to use than the outdated SHN format.
