surfing days at the beach or simply learn more about this distinct
subculture. Surfboard shaping, vintage surfboards, surfing films, and
San Francisco's own local surf band, The Mermen, all present different
aspects of the history, science and culture of surfing. See below for
details."

"SPORT! Special Events
Performance and Discussion: The Mermen
Under the Skylights, 4-5 pm
Come hear one of the Bay Area's hottest bands, The Mermen, perform, with
a special introduction by guitarist Jim Thomas, who talks about the
roots of their unique sound which takes its inspiration from sources as
varied as natural sounds, early surf music, Polynesian rhythms, Indian
music and good old Rock and Roll."

(Jim Thomas spoke for 20 minutes in the McBean Theatre before the performance.)
