The Crowes captured on a rainy night in Asheville. I must admit I went into this show with a bit of hesitation as Marc Ford had left the band since my last date with them. I always loved what Marc brought to the band - he always seemed to have the perfect fill, the perfect tone, the perfect soul - for anything the Robinson's cared to pull out of the catalog. Also was my first show without my favorite martian, Eddie Harsch, on keys. If there's one thing this show taught me, it's never doubt the Robinson brothers - they always manage to deliver. I've seen a ton of Crowes shows and i'd probably land this one in the top third. Asheville always seems to bring out a good vibe in Chris. It's a "bohemian" town nestled in the Blue Ridge mountains and Chris seems to feed off that. This show was a little different in that we got both "My Morning Song" and "Thorn" in the set. They usually tend to select one or the other. An interesting note on this night - Rich had broken his ankle a few days before, was helped on and off the stage on crutches and played the show sitting down. Also, a note of thanks to the staff at Thomas Wolfe. I had gotten a ticket late in the game and had a seat pretty far back in the corner. I had my gear and asked about taping near the board. It was in a walkway and the usher said he couldn't allow me to set up there but he got on his radio and got the venue manager down there to work with me. After looking at some different options and actually asking me what would work out best, he allowed me to set up in a row of seats they had reserved behind the sound. It was me and my gear in the two middle seats of an empty row - talk about taper friendly. I just love southern hospitality! Thanks to the Crowes for setting the expectation with the venue that recording is not only allowed but encouraged and thanks to the venue for being so accomodating. Y'all enjoy.
