Here's a really sweet set by the Black Crowes about the time they were starting to rule the rock world. This was the final time I'd gotten to see them in 1990 but the first time as a headliner. It remains one of my favorite shows from the "Shake Your Moneymaker" period. And boy was it loud. You get all the straight ahead rock attitude of that record as well as some really strong indication of the improvisational road the band was starting to head down. The medley of "Shake 'Em On Down > Get Back" is here as well as rare live versions of "Miserable" (never released) and "The Words You Throw Away" (released as a B-side only). The two latter songs seem to be bridge tunes that the Crowes were using to move from the "Moneymaker" style to the expanded scope of "The Southern Harmony And Musical Companion". Chris was pretty manic at this show - never standing still and always a blur. Johnny Colt and Jeff Cease downed a fifth of Jack - just another day at the office for them.
Other than the great show itself, I have two really specific memories connected to this one. First memory - Burning Tree opened and I loved 'em. Didn't know who Marc Ford was before that night but I found out in a hurry. It wasn't long after this show that I heard the Crowes had booted Jeff Cease and replaced him with Marc Ford. Based on the fact I had loved everything the Crowes had done up til that point and was blown away by Marc and Burning Tree, I remember thinking, at the time, how that move may have screwed up two bands I really loved. Well, little did I know the Crowes and Marc would take things to an incredible new level.
Second memory - The Crowes were on a local radio station the afternoon before this gig. They decided to give away a pair of guest list slots to this sold out show to the first person who could call in and tell them the name of Free's guitar player. My buddy was working on a sales route and he pulled over at the first pay phone he could find. He knew nobody listening to this at 2:30 in the afternoon would know it was Paul Kossoff. Nobody. He was hanging out of his car door listening to the phone ring into the station when he heard me on the air giving Chris the right answer. He told me all he could say was "Well hell, of course HE knows." Enjoy.
