Alphonso's Birthday Show

*24-bit/48kHz recording*

From Left to right in stereo image and onstage:
Steve Kimock - Guitars, steel table guitar [far left]
Rodney Holmes - Drums, Percussion, techno-loop on laptop computer [just left of center by 2 feet]
Alphonso Johnson - Bass guitar [between Rodney and Mitch on right]
Mitch Stein - Guitar [far right]

Recorded and mastered by Dan Heend - ccryder@ix.netcom.com

Schoeps CMC6-MK4V ORTF DFC on stage -> 25" AudioMagic Extreme XLR Mic cables -> Grace Lunatec V2 -> 1m AudioMagic Scepter XLR Signal Cable -> AD2K+ @ 24/48 -> DAARWIN-24 Laptop (VXPocket, Win2K CLEAR OS build v2.1, Sonic Foundry Vegas Video 2.0).  Tracked into separate files using Sound Forge 5.0, compressed with Monkeys Audio Compressor v3.91b1.  Only trims and fades at start and ends of sets were performed.  No other processing was performed, with exception to what is contained in the comment section below.  Individual files can be concatenated for seamless reconstruction of the original monolithic files.

16-bit mastering performed with Sound Forge 5.0 (in order: Fades at beginning and end of sets, downsampling to 44.1kHz with anti-alias on at level 4 [best quality], dithering and noise shaping applied with Waves L1 Ultramaximizer Type 1 dither with Ultra Noise shaping, truncation to 16-bit).  All files were SHNTOOLed for proper CD sector boundaries. Overlapping fade tracks were created after SHNTOOLing. SHN files were then created.  Drop D1T5 and D2T1 & concatenate all remaining waves to achieve seamless recreation of original recording.  There are MD5's of both the .wav files and the resultant .shn files.

24-bit .WAVs = 2.70GB
24-bit .APEs = 1.74GB
16-bit .WAVs = 1.65GB
16-bit .SHNs = 925MB

Burned onto 4x74 minute Data CD's in 24-bit/48kHz .APE format, 3x74min Audio CD's, or 2x74min 16-bit 44.1kHz SHN CD's.

Comments from Dan:
Unfortunately, the patchbay had some problems in the 2nd set for all of the DAT patchers out there, and the result is, only this 24-bit material and the backup DAT deck were unaffected (they were not affiliated with the patchbay).  A 16-bit 44.1kHz version of this show has been mastered from this 24-bit material by me, and will undoubtedly be the only CD mastering worth having from my mics.  The backup DAT was given to someone else who failed to master it properly and was subsequently prematurely put into distribution, being recalled days later.  Therefore, the only *good* SHN files or CD's from my mics that anyone *should* have will have been mastered by me.  In other words, if it's Schoeps 4V's onstage, and it wasn't mastered by me, seek a better copy.

*********REVISED 2/17/2002*********
Fade track D2T1 had extra RIFF chunks which cause clicks at the end of the track with some burning/playback software.
Ran it through SHNTOOL to remove the extra data, reshn'ed it, and created new MD5's for both the .wav's and the shn's.
Problem solved.  This shouldn't hold up everything too much because it is redundant sonic information anyway.  There is still a complete show in there...
-Dan

The checksum for disc 1 track 5 is missing from the md5 file linked above. Perhaps it was accidentally removed when this source was updated to strip out the extra header info on d2t1. The checksum I have is:

go for the Soundfield recording of this show, even though it is 16 bit. It's one of Ron Keyser's best Soundfield recordings, and a great show indeed. The IUTY is a personal favorite version.
