My first show! I wandered down to the front of the stage about 5 minutes before the band came out, not knowing what to expect. With no prompting, I magically called the first song before the first note was tuned. That was the beginning of the end for me. Took about 10 seconds of Minglewood Blues to go from liking some albums to flat-out, irrational, lifelong devotion.

I remember clearly the very tactile nature of the music, a feel that I very rarely got from any future shows: a China Cat with notes so dense and round that it created an almost visible wall in front of the stage; Brent's keyboard standing alone and showering crystal clear rain during Sugaree; a monstrous Terrapin that engulfed everything for hours. (It was so hot on the floor that a guy next to me drank an entire container of fake lemon extract that comes in the plastic lemon. Possibly the most awe inspiring act I ever witnessed at a show.)

Jerry was still on the left side of the stage at that time, and we were eye-to-eye the whole show. It was only after a few dozen more shows that I realized I had hit a rare powerhouse my first time out. Not many since have measured up to this one.

BTW, the venue on the show is invariably listed incorrectly -- it was the Seattle Center Arena (the ice hockey rink), not the Coliseum (a much larger basketball venue).
