yes i was at both of these shows.we arrived the early morning/late night before the first show & set up at a hotel in the santa fe city limits where we got silly, drinking & goofing off at the pool.we hit the lot by midday & all hell broke loose.the hog farmers and their help had setup a campgrounds on a barren lot adjacent to the parking area at the downs and that was, well if you were there, you'd know..it was basically sheer insanity.hippies frantically buzzing around, tripping, laughin, having a grand time in the desert sun..though at night it did get very cold..while waiting on line to go into the downs the first day(these were afternoon shows)over the loud speaker strapped to a pole at the foot of the gate(i forget whom spoke)but i wont ever forget what was announced.."taping will be allowed at these performances etc etc etc" well,i have never seen so many taper elite run like hell that didnt have their rigs on line with them frantically back to their vehicles for mics, decks, stands, etc etc..we were ecstatic over the fact that since the tapers pit & taper tickets were still a few years off that we had been given cordial permission to dupe these shows & what shows they were..the first afternoon was quite a treat and the fellas smoked but after a wild evening in the camp it was time for this show, the 2nd afternoon & it started off with a steady but light rain that intensified as the 1st set dwindled to an end...they took their usual break & we mingled all wacked out & wiggin'.i ran into hugh rohmney(aka wavy gravy )& he had this bull horn(i guess it was, kind of like a bicycle horn with a bulb on the end)and i asked him if i could mess with it(im pretty sure it came over on jeffs source too)then with phil donning a mexican sombrero a rainbow touched down upon the stage & sent the boys into a frenzy & the intensity didnt let up throughout the rest of the show.well we ended it off, packed our gear and slowly but surely set out for the next show in/at manor downs, austin,tx but thats another story...over all this was one of the best experiences of my natural life and at 18 i guess i'll never forget santa fe 1983 and still to this day, some almost 24 years later it sticks in my mind like a tattoo..thanks
