Event Notes
I asked the traffic director how people were coming and he said that 80,000 people were supposed to be coming. They started their set at 10:00pm or 10:10pm, making them 10-20 minutes late compared to the 9:50pm set time on the most recent time-sheet released on the R.T.B. website. We walked in and security was so easy, I wouldn't even call it security. I easily (and do regret it) could have recorded the show. The sound was absolutely excellent and mixed great. The sound was at a great volume that wasn't defining but was loud enough to hear clearly. Many criticized the sound at Coachella saying that it sounded a bit muddy and that the bass was a bit hard to hear. Give them a break they hadn't performed in almost 6 ½ years. Another thing people criticized about Coachella was the bands energy (which I still disagree with). The band with jumping, rocking their heads back and forth, etc. Brad was hitting hard, Zack was jumping, Tim was beating the hell out of his bass, and Tom was putting on his usual great performances. Another huge highlight to me was the lighting and effects. A lot of the time the lighting is delayed a couple seconds, which gives you a disappointing aspect but it was right on time and I give the lighting people props because they knew what they were doing. There were many different colors (I got pictures from each song so check back and I'll upload my pictures. Everyone was wearing Rage shirts, a lot were the R.T.B. shirts which were ironically $25 each, Cough! Cough! Profit Bullshit! Cough! I really didn't care because bought 3 Rage shirts there. I was wearing 4 total shirts the whole time. I was already hot and dehydrated by the third song. The crowds were loud but not many people were jumping or being crazy. That puzzled me because I heard that Coachella 2007 was moshing like everywhere. But this didn't disappoint me, I was actually happy because people were able to enjoy themselves without having to worry about getting jacked up. As far as after the show, most reading this that went know what the hell I'm talking about. Shit was backed the FUCK up with parking! I'm sorry but it was that bad. People were getting stuck in the sand dunes in between the ghetto-ass dirt parking lots and paved roads. Cars were blowing tires and I wouldn't be surprised that people were running out of gas/ batteries going dead from sitting in line. People were getting air-lifted for something, probably drunk or high off their asses. People were sleeping in their cars in the middle of the street waiting… and waiting… hours upon hours. People were like 50 feet behind the next car in lane Me and my partner in action were in the car from 12:30a.m. to 3:30a.m. We would have been in the line for another hour but we said "Screw it!" and took a dirt road straight to the freeway. That was the only problem that I thought the festival had.
Song Notes
1(Guerrilla Radio)-
I'm sure this was the second time in history that they opened with this. During the chorus, Zack would say "Lights Out". Then Tim would say "Guerrilla Radio" and then the crowd would scream "Turn That Shit Up!" Zack let the crowd sing the lyrics after the guitar solo, "It Has To Start Somewhere, It Has To Start Sometime, What Better Place Than Here, What Better Time Than Now?"
2(People Of The Sun)-
Zack said something that might have been in Spanish. He said something like "Where are my raza at? You are the People Of The Sun."
3(Bullet In The Head)-
Zack had a short speech before the part where he says "Are You Standing In Line, Are You Believing The Lies?" In summary he started off by saying that someone said the last generation of people were the best, but Zack disagreed and said that this generation of people quite possibly be the best group of people (not sure if he meant living people or the best ever). Then went on to how we need to not the "fascist motherfuckers" control the government. He then said how we need to take our actions from the festival to the streets. One note though is that after the speech, Zack made it a point and emphasized asking "Are You Standing In Line? Are You Believing The Lies? Are You Bowing Down To The Flag? You Gotta Bullet In Your Head."
4(Vietnow)-
Zack said at the beginning he asked "If you know the words to this, sing along with me."
5(Bombtrack)-
There were many fires on the field, at least 6 all at the same time. Many people were dancing and some-what moshing around them during the chorus, "Burn, Burn, Yes Ya Gonna Burn." It's funny because most people were burning plastic, and believe me I'm no environmental activist, but when you're that close to the fire, it's really bad to breathe in all that shit.
6(Down Rodeo)-
Nothing out of the ordinary happened with this song. The crowd was happy to hear this song because people were cheering very loud for it after.
7(Testify)-
Only thing I have to say that was unordinary was that the guitar solo (for those that don't know what Tom does on this guitar solo, he pulls out the plug that is connected to the guitar and hits it on the bridge to create feedback) he really changed it up, it was almost all completely new solo done the same way, it was personally my favorite solo Tom Morello has done on Testify ever.
8(No Shelter)
Before the song started, Zack announced "I would like to dedicate this song to a group called Public Enemy. This was the first time since the reunion that they played this song. They played this song at a slightly slower tempo. It didn't take away from the song, just wanted to note that.
9(Know Your Enemy)-
This is just a crowd favorite, and most of the crowd was singing along to it. Definitely one of the best songs of the night. Quite surprised that they didn't bring out someone, knowing that the band was close friends with groups like Cypress Hill, Public Enemy, and Wu-Tang Clan, to sing the "I Got No Patience Now, So Sick Of Complacence Now" part. I guess it just goes to show I don't know jack about Rage Against The Machine, huh? LOL. They also played this song at a slightly slower speed but that isn't unusual because Know Your Enemy has been played at all types of speeds before.
10(Sleep Now In The Fire)-
I think this had to have been one of the most powerful occasions they have played this song, (possibly more powerful when done in New York City during shoot for the music video. I never knew how much the crowd loved this song. I was aware that it was possibly the most popular single off of The Battle Of Los Angeles. A very high percentage of the crowd was singing along to this song, and they were also very loud, it was very pleasing to me and made me smile. Usually the sound of the guitar solo sounds a bit uneasy on the ears. The technique used on this is the toggle switch and whammy bar are used while receiving lots of feedback from the amp. But this time was a whole different solo. The feedback was mixed very well so that it didn't sound too much like a live accident. He also completely changed up the bends of the sounds, just like in Testify. Once again I believe this was one of the best Sleep Now In The Fire solo.
11(War Within A Breath)-
At the beginning of the song, it was dark so I wasn't able to tell what guitar he had on, making it hard to guess what the next song was. To note many "hard-core" Rage fans (sorry if that made it sound gay) are able to tell what song is next just by listening to the little noises coming out of Tom's amp, we're able to do this by listening to so many bootlegs and concerts by them it's like a gift or a talent. Anyway, sorry a little off topic, the noise coming out of his amp made it sound like they were going to play How I Could Just Kill A Man but then I was soon guaranteed that it wasn't. I set my hopes really high and they were crushed. Now Tim's bass really stood out on this song. In the intro, it opens with Tom and Tim. Now Tim does a thing with some type of effect for the sound and then uses something like a wah-wah pedal. Tim's bass hit the highest bend I've ever heard, it was so sweet. The only other thing that happened was after the chorus, Tom and Brad usually will descend the sound and Zack will say "It's Land Or Death" and do a guitar riff and go straight into their jam but this time they extended the descend of sound until it was silent and Zack waited some time to say "It's Land Or Death".
12(Bulls On Parade)-
This was the opener of the encore. Tom did the intro on the guitar where he messes with the tone and volume knobs. You can here this on the Live At The Grand Olympic Auditorium and other various live performances during the Battle Of Los Angeles era. During the guitar solo, Zack was yelling "Go! Go! Go!" and then he was like "Check out our D.J. over here" referring to Tom Morello.
13(Freedom)-
Well this song was so soothing during the verses, it made close my eyes. So much of the crowd was singing. And then when Zack said "Your Anger Is A Gift!" everyone was jumping as high as they could. Tom took a different approach to the Freedom solo. He went classic as you could say. It was pretty close to the one done in 1992. Then they went into the jam done at the end of Township Rebellion. This was definitely done way better here than at Coachella. It was kind of funny because not many people were singing along with the "When Ignorance Reigns, Life Is Lost", people were probably thinking like "Is this a new song or what?"
14(Killing In The Name)-
This overall was just great song because it is probably the most popular and controversial song. I know everyone was singing along with it from the opening "Killing In The Name" to the last "Fuck You I Won't Do What You Tell Me, Motherfucker!". It was a classic song done well.
Tim Commerford
Tim's bass was the best I had ever heard it. Sometimes it is hard to hear, (actually hardly) but you were able to hear at this show. The sound of it was such a phat and deep sound. Personally I think the highlights of the night as far as bass were Bullet In The Head, Vietnow, No Shelter, Sleep Now In The Fire, and War Within a Breath. As far as Tim's backing vocals, sometimes he sounds a bit out of pitch, but his vocals were very strong and powerful sounded great.
Brad Wilk
Brad turned it up a notch and changed some things. He added a lot of extra fills that fit in well. Now he wasn't trying to showboat or anything, but it was just nice seeing for once Brad showing off a bit of his talent on drums. Some drum highlights were Vietnow, Bombtrack, Down Rodeo, Sleep Now In The Fire, and War Within A Breath.
