Show Reviews
This was another one of the Pozo Summer Concert Series. The Pozo Saloon is am old 100+ year old stage stop out in the middle of nowhere, about 20 miles from the main highway. They hold concerts there in the field behind the saloon regularly. In recent years the Saloon owners have built a new stage out in the back pasture, but in the early 90's the stage was nothing more than the Saloon's back porch. There were a lot of trees out back that obscured site lines to the 'stage', unless you were close up. This particular show was on a Sunday morning. Country Joe opened for Maria Muldaur and NRPS. It was a shame that so many people talked through Joe's set. I had my recording equipment hidden in a back pack at the foot of my lawn chair. We were in the front row, not too far from the right PA stack. Being that it was broad daylight, it was hard to hide the microphones so I had them low in the backpack in front of the speaker. This worked fairly well. I've seen a lot of shows at the Pozo Saloon. Joe had played there on more than one occasion. One year he went after Dan Hicks and I was actually able to get Dan's permission for a board recording. I thought that I could tape Joe's set too through the board (He actually agreed after the set) but unbeknownst to me, one of the sound crew had turned off my line out after the second song in Joe's set. I was a little bummed. :(
