Bela Fleck & The Flecktones opened for the Dead on the final Grateful Dead NYE show. The mood at this show was kind of somber, because Bill Graham had recently died and whatever he was working on for a NYE countdown never materialized. Instead, old films of past Dead NYE shows were shown on the screens. I wasn't that impressed with Bela's band at the time, though I grew to really like them later. They put on a decent show, but I don't believe that Jeff Coffin was in the band yet, and he plays a mean sax. Maybe that is what they were missing. I do remember that I had lugged all my taping equipment into the Coliseum only to find the entire taping section had been 'reserved' with coats and yellow tape for mostly non tapers. I ended up sitting up high in the rafters and not recording the show.
