This was the fifth time that I've seen / recorded Dick Dale. His jams seem to change a little bit from concert to concert, which is a great reason to see multiple shows. Dick seems to be slowing down a bit, as he played for about 66 minutes. Still, not bad for a guy who is 75 years old. The man is a legend, and I'm fortunate to have seen such really good Dick Dale shows. His transitions between songs / instrumentals is blindingly fast, and he sometimes just plays little medleys of tunes. He played covers of Johnny Cash's 'I Walk The Line', and Ray Charles' 'What'd I Say?' (which he played on the 1965 release of the 'Live at Ciro's' LP), 'The House Of The Rising Sun', and also did a lot of his old tunes like 'Let's Go Trippin', 'Peter Gunn', 'Shake And Stomp', 'Mr Peppermint Man', and closed with 'Miserlou'. There was no encore. Early in the show, Dick pointed out the group of performer's enlarged prints that hang along the left-hand wall of SLO Brew, and raised a stink because he didn't see HIS picture (which is hanging on the back wall without it's own overhead light.) His bass player, Sammy Bolle, pointed it out to him, and then Dick groused that it didn't have a light like the other prints. Too funny. I missed Dick the last time that he came to SLO because I had a bad cold then and I worried that I would cough all through the recording! I first saw him at the Catalyst on 1/14/95. That recording is one of my favorites, and was the last show that I recorded with my Sony WM-D6C before switching to DAT. My dad first saw Dick Dale at the Rendezvous Ballroom in Balboa, CA in 1961. Those would have been shows to see!
