I got to SLO Brew at 6 pm. to ask the band for a board patch as they were sound checking. Tim Bluhm was, as always, very gracious and readily agreed to me plugging in. Kip, the SLO Brew sound man, gave me an XLR line out to my Tascam DA-P1. I had three hours to wait before Mother Hips took the stage. Their set was a little over 80 minutes, including the encore, which was a little shorter than the last time that I have seen them. (The last time that I saw Mother Hips was when the stage was upstairs at SLO Brew, back in 2000.) There was a fight on the floor near the stage in the middle of 'Young Charles Ives'. The bass player made some comments about it at the next break between songs. There was broken glass everywhere after a lot of wine and beer glasses were knocked off the rail that separates the booths from the floor. I don't know what started it, but I have never seen a fight there before. My friend Elizabeth says it happens frequently. After the show, I had to have Kip grab me a set list from under the drum kit on stage so I could try and piece together the set list. I know the old songs but was unclear on the names of the newer ones. I'm getting too old for these long stand-up shows. It hurts my feat too much. My sister is a big Mother Hips fan and her birthday was this same night (Dec. 8) I'm sorry she couldn't make the show. She was the one who had wanted me to record the 'Hips at SLO Brew in 2000. Thanks to Ryan NeRoy for putting this one up on Live Music Archive.
