Db News
What's playing on bt.etree is limited to those shows with source links to db. Download and peer counts have been added to source details.
Messageboards on index now sort by most recent post per thread.
Now Playing @ bt.etree uses db.etree's artist and shows table for date & name.
Pending sources are now visible by direct link only: http://db.etree.org/shn/74054
Implemented inline show editing. Changed all show approval processes.
Browsing by venues now works. This is only a first draft and merging of venues, citys and states will take some time, so don't expect browsing by venues to be completly correct.
Logins are handled through pear::Auth. Rembering logins finally works again.
Venue, city, and state are now searchable along with setlists
Added top 10 traded artists to stats
New user search and paginated users
http://db.etree.org/index2.php - A new look for db.
ibiblio setup a new server which db.etree's now running on. If you browse into any issues, please report them to db@etree.org
All smarty lists are now cached. The lists are un-cached whenever you edit or add a show, modify your user info, change your multiple lists, or delete a show. This change will be a huge improvement for everyone on the site, especially those using smarty skins. Also, the front page is now cached for 20 minutes instead of 10.
The default skin has been changed to a newly created smarty skin...if you don't like it, pick a different skin. The list of users will now only list users that have been active within the last year.
I've completly reworked the lookup_show page. This page is used for querying the whole database, for looking at specific show details, and for listing users that own a particular show. The list of users is now paged so only 30 are listed at a time. This was a necesary change to reduce bandwidth use. More changes to come...
During the last year I've added three other administrators to db.etree.org: Diana Hamilton, Mark Goldey, and Dave Mallick. These three have really picked up my slack as I've delved into other interests. I've created a new address for db.etree.org administrative requests: db at etree.org Please use this address for any administrative requests instead of emailing me directly.
Importing of shows works again. All shn text docs are now formated with <pre> tags around them to give them a true text document look and layout.
User comments are now sorted with the newest at the top.
Minor tweeks done today: a checkbox will appear on the add new show page when you have the show you're adding on your want list. The default for the checkbox is checked and, if checked, the show will be deleted from your want list when you add the show to your owned list.
Rewrote the add and update myshows page to improve performance and make the code half-way readable.
Your default multiple list is now checked by default when adding a new show to your list.
I don't know why I didn't think of this before, but I've now linked all sources in circ. to the detail for each show. http://db.etree.org/lookup_show.php3?shows_key=402 for an example
I've removed most of the archive.org shows from the main page of db.etree.org. You can still see them at http://archive.org/audio/ ...they were just mirrored here. I've replaced those shows with the most popular bittorrents from http://bt.etree.org
OK, its time to kick the tires on the the etree.org community tracker. Without further ado, please welcome http://bt.etree.org
The site shares account information with db.etree.org, so just use your login and password from there (you must login to be able to upload torrents). Downloading does not require logging in.
The tracker announce URL for use with CompleteDir, BTEasy, maketorrent and the like is http://bt.etree.org/announce.php
There is now a small calendar icon to the right of the band name and date for any show detail. Clicking this will take you to the calendar view for the band, month, and year of the show.
The [want list] code has been completly rewritten and a [new page] has been added which will try to find the best matches for trades based on your want list. If you have a second, please check that new page out. I don't know what to call it yet and would love some feedback on it.
I've added a [browsable calendar] limited to one state or band at a time. Because there is not a strict state format for db.etree the state list isn't perfect and only lists those states with shows for the current month. If any festivals are in the DB for the current month, they will be listed too
I've rearranged the main page recent sources in circulation entries. The 26 most recently entered bands are listed, grouped by date of most recent changes. Click on the band name to see the 30 most recent sources added for that band.
I've finally removed the ability to edit the master show record (UpdateSetlists) from the edit your show screen and moved it to it's own page. There is now a 'Edit this show record' link in the show detail for every show. If you notice bad data in any record, just click that link and correct the info. All edits will be queued for review by your friendly shn and setlist volunteers to insure accuracy.
Ever get the itch to hear a particular song but don't know which show it's on? Try this: http://db.etree.org/search_setlists.php
I don't know what you guys will end up doing with it, but I think it's pretty cool.
Rewrote color picker interface to use http://webfx.eae.net/ slider code. It works with Mozilla, Internet Explorer and Lynx.
I added Video (tape) and VCD to the Media Types. It will take a day or two before all the user pages will update (because of caching), but if you are into trading legal VCD's or video's, you can now say so by selecting those media types under the UpdateYourUserInformation page.
Several changes: Shows on your want list which are downloadable are now marked in red. The sources in circulation page and all smarty skins now sort artists while ignoring any prefix.
I am in the process of changing db.etree.org ordering of artist names to ignore prefixes such as 'A' or 'The'. These articles will still be part of the artists names but to add a show to your list for The Motet, you will now find The Motet listed under 'M', not under 'T'. This is a work in progress. You may see changes to ordering, etc. as the project progresses.
Added Zzyzx (http://www.ihoz.com) phish, sci, and dbr stats integration to attended shows page. If you have the shows you've seen listed on your attended shows page, you can use the link at the top to go to another page where you hit the big button to generate your personal stats.
Growing pains. db.etree.org has become a burden on its host. Until I can find tweaks to relieve this burden, you may receive a 503 error page a lot. Hit reload and keep your fingers crossed and you may get through. Your list data is not in danger.
After receiving specific permission from Jon Aizen (http://archive.org) and Travis Mathis (http://musicfreaks.net), I've added a 'Browse downloadable shows' which combines the data from the sites to let you browse to a show detail on db.etree which is downloadable from one of theirs.
http://www.musicfreaks.net is a new service site for the lossless audio community. I'm working with them to share their data here. You'll notice a link strait to their show download details strait from db.etree set list information now. Example: http://db.etree.org/lookup_show.php3?showdate=1/2/03&artist_key=4
Finally forced everyone to verify their real email address. This has been my intention for a long while...it's not a spur-of-the-moment decision. If you run into complications while verifying your email address, post on the Questions and Suggestions messageboard. If you keep getting a 'you must verify your email address' message, flush your cache. Details for doing this here: http://www.softsnow.biz/adcleaner/help/flush_cache.html
Update: Here's why I did this
I will be restructuring the very basic user authentication backend of db.etree soon so that passwords will become case sensitive. This restructuring will mean passwords are no longer stored in plain text in the database so I won't be able to tell you your lost password but you will be able to reset your password if you loose it.
Because of this future enhancement to db.etree security, I need everyone to verify thier email because I suspect a LOT of people have mixed case passwords and don't realize it. When I make the enhancement a lot of users will not be able to log in and will need their password reset; I need the real email first so I can have the system send them this new, reset password.
Added ShowReviews link to main page. Added documentation on ShowReviews, ShowReviewRatings, and AttendedShows.
What: Brief maintenance on main ibiblio.org web server
When: 03 Mar 2003, 09:30 EST, lasting 15-20 minutes
We will be taking the main ibiblio web server offline briefly to add a network card. The maintenance is expected to last between 15 and 20 minutes. During this time, ftp, http, and rsync will be unavailable on www.ibiblio.org and all hosted domains. We apologize for the inconvenience.
So, this means we'll have a little down time Monday morning. I don't think this should affect anyone because you should be doing one of the following:
Per this thread: http://db.etree.org/messageboards/read.php?f=3&i=2693&t=2693 I have changed the user comments page to list the persons email address as a mailto: link and I have changed the Smarty - Your Colors skin so the email link goes to the comments page. Please check this out and discuss in the thread. An example is my list: http://db.etree.org/toma
I have an idea for a new feature for db.etree.org and would like to hear feedback about it. Since the beginning of db.etree there has been a 'attendance' field in the user show data. This field has been very underexploited but, by itself, it's not very useful, however, I would like to take the concept of attended shows a bit further. Read here for details: http://db.etree.org/messageboards/read.php?f=3&i=2722&t=2722
Stats are working again. They got screwed up a few days ago. http://db.etree.org/webalizer/
This thread: http://forums.etree.org/viewtopic.php?t=717 got me thinking about faster ways to add shows to db.etree.org. So, I created this: http://db.etree.org/soap/db_md5add.zip
That is a very small visual basic application which will allow you to add a show to your db.etree.org list by simply dragging an md5 file onto it. Documentation is here: db.etree.org md5add
The LlaMA is even more integrated with db.etree now. By checking md5's on both sites, I can now determine which sources are available on both web sites. Because of this, I've added a link to the /shncirc/ artist detail pages to download a specific source when that source can be identified.
Using the spotlight show and staff picks from the LlaMA (Live Music Archive, soon to be formerly known as the 'etree archive'), I've put their picks on the front page. I'll be adding a 'browse featured recordings' as soon as I have some more.
The FAQ questions have been moved to the bottom of the front page.
I think this is a really cool feature and I'm excited to have it. I hope those links will help introduce people to new artists and draw more people to the LlaMA.
I rewrote the shndetail page. Other sources for the same show are now linked from any show detail. Started phase out of 'SHN'. Using 'Source' now. Thanks a lot flac :p
I've been working with the InternetArchive to integrate their data with my own. The first sign of something working is now in place. For any show that is downloadable from the archive, a link will now appear at the bottom of that shows detail which will take you to the detail for that download on archive.org.
The Browse Shows Owned by Users of this site link on the main page will show you which artists and shows are downloadable. Artist names and show dates for downloadable shows now show up in bold. Hopefull I'll get some documentation up here (or someone will write it up for me!) for how to use the InternetArchive.
Site statistics work again: http://db.etree.org/webalizer/
Much of the historical stuff is in place too.
I'm considering adding a 'summary' field for users which would be searchable by other users. Please check out the messageboard and post your comments:
http://db.etree.org/messageboards/read.php?f=3&i=2147&t=2147
db.etree.org is now running on a new server. A big thanks to the folks at http://www.ibiblio.org/ for hosting this! This is a long term host and I don't expect to move the server again any time soon. There may be some problems because of the move. Please post any you find to the Questions and Suggestions messageboard.
Problems found and fixed:
Todo (not fixed:
The list of users pages will now exclude all users who haven't updated their list since 8/22/02. I modified the database on that date which caused all 'last updated' fields to be set to that date. By filtering to just those uses that have updated since then, only users that are activly trading or maintaining thier list will be listed on the users pages. Those users will not be excluded from the 'browse shows owned by users of this site' results.
I finally made the login page look less ugly and implemented 'remember login'
A smarty skin for the popular 'phlow' was donated by Evan Bernstein. This skin has a lot of the higher-end features of db.etree included in it...check it out!
SiteNavigationBar: the newest versions of [Mozilla] support a navigation bar for web sites. I've put links in the <head> of the db.etree web pages to enable this if you are using mozilla (internet explorer does not support this and I don't know if they plan to, but you won't notice anything different if using IE).
See the SiteNavigationBar page for more info.
DOWNTIME: As you probably saw, the etree web sites had significant downtime over the last five days. We're back up on a temporary server until we get a full-time host secured. Future downtime will be limited to maybe 1 hour + however long it takes the dns change to propagate. So, I don't expect any future interruptions.
It is entirely possible I missed something when moving db.etree from the old server to this. If you see something that doesn't work right, please post about it on the message boards. - Tom
I've added a new [documentation] section to db.etree.org (you're reading it). I put this in place because I feel we've had good success with the etree wiki and I think it will be an improvement to the current FAQ. Check it out and add your db.etree.tricks to it!
Review the [old news page] if you'd like.
