| Notes: | AT18 (note: this is the text file that came with the fileset) This is a great bootleg of outtakes from my all time favorite band. I read the review in Goldmine Magazine (attached) back in '91 and luckily had a store in town that sold bootlegs. It's great that we're able to get them all for free now, but in 1991 without the internet nor cd burners, you had to shell out $ to get them. Anyhow, the review convinced me to buy it. I was initially a little disappointed at the sound quality on certain sections, but now looking back, overall the sound is very good. Creative experimentation produced viable alternate versions of the foursome's songs, many of which stand proudly beside their "official" counterparts. These are not broken-string or blown-vocal flubs, but fully conceived outtakes with different edits or mixes. And though Anthology 3 dealt admirably with the embarrassment of riches from Abbey Road. some of the recorded wealth still unreleased is examined here. Take 37 -- transferring "Something" from eight-track to eight-track -- is a decent alternate with an extended dissonant jam tagged on the end (albeit a tad repetitious). Were it not for the muddy sound which crops up in "Sun King" and runs through the rest of the "Huge Melody," this segment would merit more attention from prospective listeners. Flawed as it is, however, its subtly different vocal mix remains intriguing. The issue of whether "Her Majesty" was originally slotted between "Mean Mr. Mustard" and "Polythene Pam" is not addressed here (that running order is convincingly preserved -- or recreated -- on the Beatleg Abbey Road Anthology a.k.a. Road Complete; Roaring Mouse RC-419/Capitol-Apple-EMI DPRO 79961 bogus promotional copy; 1995). USM, Vol. 5 gives collectors the "complete" end chord of "Her Majesty" inadvertently truncated on the final groove of the "real" Abbey Road. The final five tracks of this CD, pirated from the lackluster "Let It Be" sessions, cannot honestly be recommended (the Beatles themselves were none too keen on that material). Be that as it may, there is ample reason for avowed collectors to seek out this CD. Part-time Beatles fans should be content with Anthology 3. -- Stansted Montfichet ************************************ Includes EAC logs and cover scans.
