Notes: PRO SHOT On June 13, 1970 in Cincinnati, Ohio at Crosley Field, "Home of the Cincinnati Reds," the Cincinnati Pop Festival, "Midsummers Rock" featured Grand Funk Railroad, Mountain, Iggy Pop and the Stooges, Alice Cooper, and Traffic with Steve Winwood. Take a trip back to the early days of "rock festivals" where indulgent drum and guitar solos ruled world and the concert sound systems weren't very good. Ah, but the drugs were plentiful! This televised concert was hosted by the very straight Jack Lescoulie who provides play-by-play commentary. San Francisco reporter Gary Schaefer interviews stoners in audience. In 1970 the guitar effects were pretty crude! Highlights are the amazingly punk Iggy Pop. Wow! Iggy crowd surfs and when an audience member offers a jar of peanut butter, Iggy smears it all over his chest and tosses chunks into the crowd. Also, a very psychedelic Alice Cooper gets a pineapple upside cake thrown into his face while he tries to hypnotize the crowd by swinging a pocket watch back and forth. Songs include: Grand Funk Railroad: "Drum Solo," "T.N.U.C.," "Inside Looking Out." Mountain: "Theme from an Imaginary Western," "Guitar Solo," "Dreams Of Milk and Honey." Alice Cooper: "Black Juju." Iggy Pop and the Stooges: "TVEye," "1970," "Feel Alright." Traffic: "John Barleycorn," "Pearly Queen," "Stranger to Himself."

Notes: DV325 Cincinnati Pop Fest - Midsummer Rock 6/13/70 DVD Source:TV station master to vhs to dvd. Grand Funk Railroad Mountain Iggy and the Stooges Alice Cooper Traffic Grand Funk Railroad: TNUC Grand Funk Railroad: Inside Looking Out Mountain: Theme for an Imaginary Western Mountain: Dreams of Milk and Honey Alice Cooper: Black Juju Traffic: John Barleycorn Traffic: Pearly Queen Traffic: Stranger to Himself Features two absolutely classic moments: the hosts and crew of the show absolutely perplexed by the Stooges as Iggy dives into the crowd, and eventually, famously, smears peanut butter all over himself. Worth the download for this alone. Second, early Alice Cooper footage includes Alice getting smacked in the face with a cream pie in midset. If all this isn't enticing enough, the show also includes vapid, "hip" commentary as the hosts try to duplicate the magic of Woodstock within the confines of a Cincinnati baseball stadium. Great, great stuff. I transferred this from a VHS copy which appears to have been some sort of a network feed, as there is a counter in the upper right of the screen throughout. There were a few moments of blank, black screen where commercials would be inserted that I edited out. 224 MPEG-2, 720 × 480, 4:3, 29.97 fps, 8.00 Mbps, lower field first 128 AC3 2/0, 48 kHz, 192 kbps
