| Notes: | TAPER: Barry Rogoff (Balrog) SOURCE: Original Master Tapes: Nakamichi 550, CM-100/CP-1's > Maxell UD-XLII TRANSFER: November 2008, at 48KHz/24 bit resolution. Downsampled to standard CD resolution here LINEAGE: Nak Dragon [Dolby B out] > RDL FP-UBC6 > MOTU 896 > Wave [48KHz/24 bit] > Izotope RX/CEP 2.0/Izotope Ozone > Wave (44.1khz,16- bits)> FLAC > Dime ORIGINAL ART by Gromek REMASTER SUMMARY: All work done at the 48/24 resolution, before downsampling. EQ work to reveal detail, as the audience heard and felt it. At least one very annoying local audience whistler has amplitude reduced by 1 dB at various points where no Yes signal occurs, but otherwise no attempts to alter band-crowd-venue sound balance. If crowd sound as real and detailed as band sound isn't desired, please pass this by and stick to soundboards or industry releases. No compression. Conservative noise reduction applied to compensate for unfavorable signal to noise ratio during quieter band moments and to further reveal midrange frequency detail, but some hiss has to be tolerated to avoid signal damage. Pitch- tempo was approximately 1% off, now corrected. | |||||

| Notes: | PRRP 065 2 source remaster...."Going For the Best" Going for the Best Here we present the rock group YES, on stage in Boston in 1977 during one of their most successful tours. In the audience that day were two expert concert tapers: Barry Rogoff and Dan Lampinski. Both used outstanding equipment and captured the concert audio for all of us to enjoy today. Sound characteristics would suggest that Rogoff was further back in the venue than Lampinski who was seated in section 2 row 11. Rogoff remembers being "dead center" but has no documentation of his exact seat. Through the wonders of the Internet and advances in computer audio mastering software, these two recordings can now be merged to produce an enhanced stereo recording of this event. The remastered recording begins with 90 seconds of the Rogoff source. The Lampinski source then comes in to produce the stereo image. Sound quality suggests that the Rogoff mics were hidden at the beginning. Sound is a bit muffled until 45 seconds into Parallels when it becomes more clear and the full quality of the stereo recording can be appreciated. When asked about this, Barry Rogoff recently stated: "It was probably the point at which enough of the people in front of us sat down to get an unobstructed, on-axis view of the PA. I was using a mike stand made from one leg of a lightweight tripod. It was held in place by a photographer's clamp on the arm of the seat. The stand was connected to the clamp with a wing nut acting as a set screw." At the end of Close To The Edge and just before the next song (Wonderous Stories) begins, both tapers changed/flipped tapes so there is a brief fade-out/fade-in. Given the need to patch a 16 second tape flip segment of the Lampinski source with the Rogoff source, at this point in the song Awaken, the stereo field converts to single-source and then reverts back to full stereo. Careful listening allows identification of this segment. This powerful performance is even better with the enhanced stereo image produced by combining these two recordings. The characteristics are best appreciated by listening to the show on a good car or living room sound system. PRRP Staff Notes from the Re-Master Each recording was separately remastered. During the process, non-destructive repairs were made to clicks, pops and other tape imperfections. Pitch and frequency response/EQ were then compared and matched as close as possible. The dynamics of the two recordings were similar and calculations were made to match average and total power for each. The two recordings were then synchronized to the exact same run time. A stereo field was then created by blending the two sources together. By combining the recordings, the overall stereo field was expanded to better reproduce the experience that must have existed in the venue that night. Phasing was corrected and routines were used to center the sound in the stereo field. The final recording was then tracked using traditional tracking points. | |||||

| Notes: | This is a very clear GFTO recording. And the crowd was surprisingly well behaved for a large city in a large venue. All songs are performed well, but especially .... Turn of the Century!! This is the most gorgeous reading I've heard of this song. The best of the tour. Chris and Alan really lay back on this and let the soaring melodic instruments take front. It's amazing how Jon melds with Steve and Rick in this languished, sweeping version. This recording runs -just slightly- fast. It's hard to tell, and at first I thought the band were just playing the songs at warp-speed tempo (it's nice to think they could play CTTE that fast, and Jon could actually reach notes THAT high). But it is running just a bit fast. It doesn't really ruin your enjoyment of the show that much, but I'm going to want to speed-fix this as soon as possible. (Now exactly how much to slow it down?) | |||||
