Notes: Also circulates as Feb. 27 but missing the last two songs. Feb. 20 is correct. The Feb. 18 Boston Globe contains a panel ad for Jazz Workshop listing George Benson Quartet from Feb. 18-25, and a band called Deodato performing "2001: A Space Odyssey" the week of Feb. 26. During this performance, Benson states that he is "playing here through Sunday." which would have been 2/25. Finally, WBCN's Jazz Workshop broadcasts were usually on a Tuesday, which would have been Feb. 20. (Feb. 27 may have been a WBCN broadcast date?) This recording is more complete and richer sounding that the circulating FM > R(x) > Akai GX4000D recording dated 2/27. Like that one, however, this recording has some FM noise and some analog tape hiss. Both have been diminished, just a touch, and some particularly loud pops, crackles and snits eliminated. The remaining blemishes are still noticeable during quiet passages. Track 10 may be a very short version of a song called "Some Blues." Band introductions begin about 25 seconds before the end of that track. The drummer's name is a best guess. Enjoy! --mhg :: 2020-10-16

Notes: George Benson Quartet - Jazz Workshop, Boston 1973-02-27 C.T.I. Era, FM (Jazamo fix) A fan of the early 70's C.T.I. Record label, it was a time when I became passionate about all styles of Jazz. I thought I'd share some CTI era artists that have been posted previously in Dime including my fixes. Here's a set from George Benson recorded during his early CTI days at the Jazz Workshop by WBCN Radio. This rare set includes his new backup guitarist Earl Klugh who had yet to record his debut lp. It also includes 2 songs Benson never recorded in the studio with the "Marvin Gaye Medley", and "Cafe Reggio", The later featured at the time on the "Shaft" soundtrack. I have applied some fixes to this show (see notes), and should anybody has a different source please share. All praise to the original seeders Carville / Allsoundz, and as always your comments are appreciated!
