Notes: UnwoundBob’85 Notes: Pink Floyd Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena, Los Angeles, California 01 February 1980 As is similar to all known copies of these rehearsals; Flesh 1, Don’t Leave Me Now, Brick 3, and the majority of Side 4’s tracks (Flesh 2-Outside The Wall) are missing. However, the overall experience is much cleaner, even with its tape hiss. Sibilance is not obfuscated by noise, and there’s plenty of extra detail in the instruments and banter onstage. Huge credit goes to neonknight and Skinny12 for doing the bulk of the work here; I’m just happy to write some “liner notes”. :) As one of the final rehearsal dates leading up to the premiere of The Wall as a piece of rock theatre, this is a fascinating document to listen to. At this point, the infrastructure was there to do a full technical rehearsal with bricklayers, lighting and props, but this run was done without backing singers from what I can tell. This is the defining document which shows just how much hold Roger had over the concept’s execution. He takes on the role of musical director, stage director and lighting director. He is the only band member that talks throughout the entire thing, other than David Gilmour’s contributions during the break in Hey You, as well as Nick Mason shouting a count in for a couple of songs. Other non-band personnel that are named include Graeme Fleming, James Guthrie, Seth Goldman, Steve O’Rourke and Gerald Scarfe. Both James Guthrie and Graeme Fleming have a few moments of conversation with Roger and/or David, Guthrie being the man in Roger’s sights during the lengthy break in One Of My Turns. As the performance itself is not typically the reason people listen to this rehearsal, there are some fascinating things to glean from the various non-music elements, some examples listed here in no particular order; • There’s a passing mention of a moment where Nick Mason would have played crash cymbals during Bring The Boys Back Home. The way Roger describes it makes it sound like Nick would have been a man-sized Jolly Chimp peeking out of a hole in the wall, which is quite the mental image! Mercifully, this was never implemented. • Roger mysteriously does not mention any of the inflatable characters or any similar elements during this rehearsal, even though at least three songs which would have them present are played. It’s possible they were not being staged during this run through, or Roger had no issues with them. • The man-lifts used to help build the wall can be heard grinding away in the distance as Roger begins singing during The Happiest Days Of Our Lives; you can hear the board operator (Guthrie?) turn his fader up and down accordingly to try and mask out the sound. Even Roger seems put off by it for a moment. • Roger says “Sorry about that, Ladies and Gentlemen” a couple of times in this rehearsal, but I’m not sure who he’s addressing; He says it once before Young Lust, and once during the break in Hey You when the lighting is being addressed with Graeme and David. The former comes off in a similar way to his banter before Young Lust in the actual shows, complete with some fake laughter, and a series of "anyway, uhm"'s that are cut off by David riffing a bit. • It seems that Graeme Fleming was still mainly in charge as lighting designer, as Roger is addressing him directly throughout; Marc Brickman would not get involved with the project until the night before the first show, so it is unknown just what Graeme had planned out with Roger save for the cues that are discussed here. • The helicopter effects tape being played at the beginning of The Happiest Days Of Our Lives runs all the way to its natural end, as it does on a couple of shows early on in the tour; this copy of the rehearsal features the most direct capture of it. The Groupie’s voice in One Of My Turns is also very close to the listener; it seems to be the original recording without added effects or additional panning, unlike the one on the album, but unfortunately cuts early. • Lastly, Roger makes a lengthy comment in time with the tail end of Goodbye Cruel World about not being able to “fill all these holes before the interval”; They still hadn’t figured out the timing on how to complete the wall before intermission, even with the presence of The Last Few Bricks. Also attached to this torrent is a lengthy transcription of all of Roger’s comments and his rants. It took me some time to try and work out what’s being said in some of the fuzzier portions, so if anyone hears something I didn’t pick up, let me know. One can only hope that a full version of this rehearsal or another from a different date on this tour (aside from the brilliant Mal Hyams video) will surface someday. This rehearsal could be subtitled; A Day in the Life of DincFlöid, The Spektacle Direktor. “Und den the band come to a pause. Und stop building ze Wall!!!”

Notes: This sounds like it's a monitor feed from the guys onstage, like what the guy running the board might be listening to in his headphones. This is not a full sounding recording, it's rather quiet. If you ever wondered what it's like to hear Roger be a sarcastic prick, this is for you.

Notes: SBD>Normal Bias Cassette Master>Maxell XL-II(4th Gen)>EAC>Flac(8) Info file says, "This is a new transfer from cassette of the tape we have all come to love. The sloppiness, the arguing ("Dave, why did you stop?" "I didn't stop, Nick did" "Well why did he stop" "I don't know why he stopped, ask him" "We must never stop"), the technical SNAFUs ("I can't hear any piano in my cans" "James there's no click track in the cans"). How can you not love this tape? The reason for the new transfer is that the version available on Roio CD is a single CD that clocks in at 78 minutes. This is from a cassette that was full up. After speed correction this version runs 90:17. I think all that was cut is some of the 2 spots where the TV goe on for a few minutes, but I though I'd offer a complete version for whomever might want it. I know everyone out there is a completest freak, so here you go. There was a hell of a lot of noise on this tape, some stemming from the original master being a normal bias cassette, most from however many generations of tape this went through before getting to me. I used noise reduction on this, but tried to be careful. Didn't take it all off, because it really hurt the music."
