Notes: First a story from the person I received this show from. This is a great story. I recorded this myself. In case you don't know, Mellencamp went around city-to-city this summer, performing impromptu, acoustic sets. It was supposed to be unannounced, low-key appearances as a "gift" to his fans. The exact location & time were announced the MORNING of the appearance and ONLY on his website. Anyway, a couple days prior, word hit the Chicago Sun-Times that he would appear. No location or time. So, I took that day off work & logged-on the official Mellencamp website. That morning, I found out that it would be Daley Plaza and 12:30pm. Daley Plaza is kinda a weird place to have such a performance. If you've seen "The Blues Bros" film, at the end of that awesome police-chase scene, Jake & Elwood lead them all to Daley Plaza which is city hall. I assumed Mellencamp would pick a park, like Grant Park or Lincoln Park. Maybe city hall wouldn't allow it. I dunno. So, I loaded my gear up and drive to Chicago that morning. I got there really early and watched as they set-up a platform/mini-stage, about 18" off the sidewalk. At the edges (left & right) of this platform was a small amp no bigger than a speaker for a home stereo. I figured that Mellencamp would be inaudible for most of the crowd... so I took my space 6' in front of the amp. So, the sound quality on this recording is fantastic. It sounds like Mellencamp is playing on your porch and you're a few feet away. While I was waiting, I noticed that a crowd was gathering. The local news arrived and I was interviewed for WGN-TV news, which is b'cast around the US on many cable stations as is other stations like Superstation TBS. Bits of me (with microphones attached to my eyeglasses!) were on the 12pm news and 9pm news. They even asked me and videotaped my MiniDisc recording equiptment, but that footage wasn't b'cast. Anyway, the recording is about 45 minutes long. Mellencamp performed about ten songs. I don't remember exactly the order, but the songs include "Spider & The Fly" & "Street Fighting Man" (both Rolling Stones songs)... a song called something like "Key West _________ (I Saw You First)".... "Pink Houses".... "Hey Gyp"... a Woody Guthrie tune.... "All Along The Watchtower" closer to Dylan's original than Hendrix' version)... and a few others. -----R** ------------------------- Fantastic recording. Setlist: 1. Small Town 2. Oklahoma Hills 3. In My Time Of Dying 4. Key West Intermezzo 5. All Along The Watchtower 6. Hey Gyp 7. Street Fighting Man 8. Cut Across Shorty 9. The Spider To The Fly 10. Pink Houses
