| Notes: | (This review is from Allan Morris) I'm sure I said this last year, but Galactic found a way to outdo themselves again! The best 2 long sets of Galactic I've ever seen. I'll try to just give bits and pieces since I don't remember the orders of songs, etc. 12/29: Galactic @ The Fillmore. I was psyched to catch the boys at such a small, legendary venue. First set was high intensity, and they busted out a lot of oldies (with the "Coolin' Off fan in the background). I remember Doo Rag w/ the Triple Threat DJs, Shucktime,Church, Hook and Sling, A sick Tiger Roll that went on for 20+ minutes including long solos from Rob and Jeff. The Houseman's voice was good, as we got I get Lifted, Running Man, Love on the Run!, Little Miss Lover.. The Black-eyed Pea>Mystery Train before the encore was fantastic. I definitely felt they were holding back with a spacey, exploratory second set. It's nice to see that the band can explore if they want. 12/30: KDTU @ The Fillmore. I've never had a bad experience at a KDTU show. It's always high-intensity, shake-your-ass-all-night music and I love it. Lets see, we heard Good for you, good for me, Groove on!, Fallin (BBQ song), Power of Soul, and a sick, sick Elephants with special guests! Fareed Haque sat in for most of the first set, and Santana's flute, trumpet and percussion player too. Mike D on the vibes/xylophone was going off. The addition of Dillion really enhances the band, and it was so good to see Zak behind the kit again. And Stanton showing up near the end was awesome. Late-night @ the DNA lounge: The music was great, but it was a logistical nightmare. Huge line to get in, many could not get in even though they had a ticket. It was way oversold. Nice-looking venue though, and a few special guests (although not as many as I thought). DJ Logic sat in for most of the night, Eric McFadden and Brian Jordan were there, and I heard Stanton showed up for the encore (I had just left). NYE @ The Warfield: We had a nice pre-show gathering at Who's your Daddy, where we happily drank $2.75 pints of beer and got excited for the unbelievable show ahead. Walking into the Warfield, you could feel the electricity in the air. We had two huge pockets of people spanning the entire front row area and going back a little. You couldn't take 2 steps without running into someone you know! KDTU comes on a 9pm sharp, with Skerik warming up before the Frog Out a few blocks away. Karl's set rocked, of course, and the crowd was going off! All the band members were doing these synchronized dance moves all through the 2 hour set. It was clear they were having a great time and so were we. Karl even addressed the crowd, saying "You guys better pace yourselves!". Someone handed Karl their cellphone during a jam, and some lucky person got to chat with him for a few seconds. Some songs I can remember: Spanish Castle Magic, Soul Satisfied..... Santana's percussion guy came out again and ripped it up with Zak and Mike on a long percussion jam. Fareed was out there again...I am now convinced that Ron Johnson is the funkiest bass player on the planet. You can't help but move and convulse when you hear those bass bombs. Set ends at around 11:00. Even the set break music rocked. Just before midnight, the curtain opens to reveal a massive stage set-up. Multiple levels of stage, with 2 huge fire simulators on each end of the stage, and two huge screens up on the second level. It was a fire theme.... Galactic comes out in matching silver Houseman suits, looking good and ready to go. The countdown ensued, and thousands of balloons came down from the ceiling, as the band busted out Jimi Hendrix's Fire. Excellent version which went into Fire on the Bayou, with Leo Nocentelli sitting in. Loved it, and no Cissy Strut ;) I wish I could remember most of the songs, hopefully someone grabbed a setlist. I remember Workin in a Coalmine, Mind is Hazy, SweetLeaf.... Karl D came out and jammed for a while, then the other members of KDTU came out one by one and switched instruments with Galactic, and jammed, then they slowly switched back. Stanton was playing this miniature kit while Zak was on the main set. The whole set was a blur, I think ending at 1:45. The final set had Skerik back up there, and ended with a beautiful Quiet Please. I know I'm leaving out a lot here, but I am still foggy after an amazing weekend! It was really great meeting some of the people on this list for the first time, and hanging out with other crews from out of town. Carm, Chuck, Huzie, Marca, Jen, Gina, Ethan, Bobby H, Aiello, Rob W.....you guys are fucking rock stars ;) Have a Happy New Year everyone, and a big Thank You to all the bands and people that made this a weekend to remember!! | |||||
