============================================================================
Pre-Show:
In January my roommates, Mike and Olvy came back from a party and told me "you HAVE to meet this guy Tom; he is a transfer student, he tapes the Grateful Dead and is studying Radio TV film" So we met and became fast friends and touring partners from 1983 thru summer 1986 when Tom moved to Santa Cruz. What I soon learned is Tom's zest for life and his enthusiasm for the Grateful Dead and taping was unparalleled in my limited GD experience. Though Tom I developed my understanding of the Dead's song cycles, the live nuances only a true fan could know. Did I know that each night of a tour they opened by alternating a Jerry or Bob tune?

As we prepared for Hampton we had several occasions to record locally and between Tom and our crew we had one Sony TC-D5M one Marantz Superscope, A set of Beyer M201's, the JVC Binaural mics. We had also started to consume boxes of Maxell tapes to where we found a wholesale connection and bought cartons of 10 packs of 10, then were selling them to all our taper friends. So we decided we should use the new Metal formulation from Maxell and TDK which soon became our choice for Masters.

On the road to Hampton we had a journey never forgotten.

The Hampton Coliseum was a round, ill maintained monstrosity on the land locked side of the Hampton Roads area. We wound up at our motel around 2 PM, and made it into the parking lot to hang out by 5 or so. It was a short walk from motel to the Coliseum. We were determined to get in all our recording gear meaning we would have two sets of microphones and two recorders. So we scoped out the entrances and decided on a strategy of who was going to bring in which piece of gear. Luckily we had five guys and one girl to distribute the gear to. We wound up inside as the gates opened and had great location on the GA floor about 60 feet from the stage dead center.

During the Help->Slip->Franklins pay attention to Brent's calypso keyboard sounds. Jerry's solos have that sweet air of joy although flubbing one verse then laughing heartily about it. Vocal flub aside, the entire song cycle is top notch. For first set highlights, the Looks Like Rain, China Cat >Rider ending is Grateful Dead full speed ahead; the band and audience were having a great time. The website dead.net claims the 'Smokestack jam' after Truckin to be the "Only one"(which I cite), but I seem to recall some others, in summer 1985, for instance. Jerry's vocals on Black Peter are haunting, this is a well constructed version of one of my favorite GD ballads.GTRFB and Saturday Night are standard hard rockin versions. Then after a good wait and the house lights coming on and we had started to take down the band came back on. We hastily started everything and caught most of the house rumblin' PA crumblin Satisfaction. Bob's energy and Phil's bomb pharts just tore up the place.The distortion you hear on this recording is a combination of the PA distorting, Phil's bass pick-ups shorting and our microphones getting overloaded. It's mostly bearable, but be warned the bass is THUMPING and mildly distorted.

On the way out of the venue the rain during the show had lifted and a thick fog had enveloped the arena and parking lot area. When we got to the end of the parking lot headed toward our hotel we looked back and it appeared as if a huge smoke ring was hanging above the fabled Hampton Roads Coliseum. As we walked along on the fog Fran's dyed by her own hands beautiful rain bow tie dyed Mexican 6 layer dress was attracting nice comments and she looked like a beautiful parrot walking through the fog. That dress was amazing and was done in the time of RIT dye made in your sink. This was just before Not Fade away and all the rest of the later in time large tie dye companies were on the scene.If I recall there wasn't a real "lot scene" at this time as all the after show activities went down at the motel row where many rooms had people wall to wall right up until sunrise.
