From Egypt with Love
One month after their legendary trip to Egypt The Grateful Dead
are back in San Francisco for 5 nights at Winterland.
It's a total of 14 hours 15 minutes and 10 seconds of history in the
final months of Winterland being a concert venue.
For at least the first 4 nights they are very much enthused and playing great!
And there's really nothing wrong with that 5th night either.  It's still
The Good Old Grateful Dead!

All 5 nights were recorded from the audience by Reinhart Holwein.
And he got fabulous recordings.  He was in a sweet spot for these shows!
The mix varies a bit from night to night but for the most part these are fantastic recordings.

And here is night 4.  This is another one of those Highlights = The Whole Damn Show!
This night has what's probably the best collaboration with the Egyptian musicians.
The crowd wants to boogie of course but they go along with Hamza el Din's first two songs quite well.
Then Ollin Arageed is when the various members of the GD come onto the stage.
It all builds up to quite a frenzy and the band drops into, Promised Land.  lol  Of course they did.
An awesome Sugaree is next.  The guitars again quite prevalent.
Everyone is heard well this night, even the drums are a bit louder.  Phil's bass is coming through quite well also.

Bertha and Good Lovin' are textbook perfect!  Roses is beautiful.  And then the big jam starts.
The jam out of space turns into Got My Mojo Workin.  The harmonica player Lee Oskar contributes starting with Drums.
Drums and harmonica, works very well!  A great Other One is next followed by an 'in the running for best ever' Stella Blue.

Below are the original notes that I have renumbered.

This show would take 3 CDs to burn it.
It's a long one and doesn't split really well.
One way to do it:

CD 1 would be tracks 01 - 10.
CD 2 would be tracks 11 - 16.
CD 3 would be tracks 17 - 22.

============================================

This is a remaster of shn #94600.
When 94600 was created there was no other audience source for patching.
So they used the soundboard.  There is an alternative audience recording now.
So I have used shn #102074 for the 3 patches. This is the info for that share:
============================
Recorded by:
Mike Martin and Mark Bunton.
Our location was on the floor under the mirrored ball about 20-25 feet from the stage dead center.

Equipment:
2 Sony ecm-280 microphones (shoulder high) > Teac PC-10 w/ Dolby > TDK SA-C90 tape

Transfer:
Nakamichi CR3A w/ Dolby > Audigy 4 Pro @ 24/44.1 > Editing with NERO > Tracked With CD Wave  > Flac (level 8)
============================

Thanks to the taper and the MOTB people and all who bring this stuff to share.
And the people who shared shn #102074.

All of the work I do is in ocenaudio and Harrison Mixbus.
Everything I do is basically about levels.  Keeping them the same in both channels
throughout the frequency range.  When I speak of levels I mean RMS levels.  Average levels.
I also tighten up phase issues when needed. Clear up any gaps that may be found.
If original files are high res, I have done most of the work at the higher sample frequency
and bit depths.  Then towards the end I've converted to 44.1 16 bit.

About the screen grabs:

One can not see everything I do in these images but it shows something about
how the audio has changed between before and after.

If I'm working from high res files the before FFT and Spectral images look
quite a bit different inherently.  But you can still see how they differ otherwise.
