SBD (shnid=8112):

Lineage: SBD > Cassette Master > Dat x 2 > CDR > SHN

All editing was performed with Cool Edit Pro.   I made several splices to patch
cassette flips using the etree audience version of this show  and
used many different techniques to make these splices as transparent
as possible.  Patches are found on the following tracks:

d1t01     6:49.23  -->    7:15.45
d1t02     0:00.00  -->    0:16.68
d1t03     0:00.00  -->    0:10.74
d1t04     0:00.00  -->    0:11.14
d1t07     0:00.00  -->    0:12.44
d1t09     4:21.98  -->    4:25.72
          4:32.27  -->    4:34.87
d2t03     8:07.53  -->   10:42.52
d3t01    10:25.76  -->   10:42.20

I would like to thank my friend Bob for getting me the etree
discs to make the patches and thank whomever took the time to
record these wonderful audience tapes.

AUD (shnid=99070):

2 Beyer M160> Sony TCD5M Master Cassette> SHN

[Archive note:]

[from rumrunner: "I downloaded these from an ftp server as is and several years later discovered there was no shnid, so I requested a shnid, and then torrented them. So I neither taped or transferred these."]

[Circulated 1/23/03; added to the database 5/19/09.]

-----------------------------------------------------------------
Thank you to Bob Harrell and Jim Groves for the SBD transfer,
to the two unknown tapers, Rob Eaton, and Mark Cohen for recording the show,
to rumrunners for sharing the Beyer M160 AUD source,
to Andy Gustin for sharing the unknown AUD source (used for patches),
and to Charlie Miller and Scott Clugston for the Eaton/Cohen AUD transfer (patch for Drums).

Notes:

The SBD cassette master source had some digital noise reduction applied (unlike 10/11/83, which had none, but this source still sounds pretty good). A subtle metallic tinkling sound can be heard at times during quieter parts of the recording, and there seems to be a slightly more brittle sound at times. From 4:47 in Drums to 10:18 in Space, this "DNR sound" becomes much more prominent and pretty distracting. To correct or help mask this issue, the matrix was mixed very AUD-heavy here, with the audience recording becoming the dominant source. At the beginning of Space, the DNR sound shifts exclusively to the left channel in the SBD. As an experiment, we restored the right channel of the matrix to its original SBD-heavy ratio at this point, while we maintained an AUD-heavy ratio in the left channel. The resulting "inverted" mix had a relatively balanced and pleasing sound - it accentuated Jerry's guitar more in the Garden. It seems the fact that Jerry's guitar and most of the other instruments are pretty centered-sounding in the SBD contributed to why this experimental mix worked the way it did.

The SBD source was pitch corrected faster (between 0.9% and 1.3%), while the AUD was pitch corrected a little slower (generally between -0.1% and -0.7%). The pitch corrected Rob Eaton recording was used as a reference in multiple areas in both sets. There's likely still a minimal margin of error but it's overall closer.

Some initial hot vocals in Cold Rain And Snow.

Some minor SBD level adjustments were made in the first set to maintain consistency.

Very light EQ was used for a few songs early in the first set. Then, the SBD source was more muffled sounding after about a minute into Cumberland Blues through the cut in Franklin's Tower, with the high end (treble) becoming noticeably lower. Compensatory EQ was applied for this entire section and was a significant improvement. No EQ was used after the Franklin's cut.

An unknown AUD source (possibly FOB Schoeps mk4), via Andy Gustin (shnid=345, 1/31/00), patches breaks between songs in the AUD, including brief cuts at the beginnings of Cumberland Blues, Looks Like Rain, Women Are Smarter and He's Gone. The tail end of He's Gone and most of Drums are patched as well. Rob Eaton and Mark Cohen's recordings patch 1:45 in Drums for the AUD track, transferred by Charlie Miller and Scott Clugston (shnid=167752, circulated 6/3/24).

Some moments of dead air in the SBD were trimmed out to match the AUD cuts, which were also cross-faded.

An unusually loud sound effect moment in Looks Like Rain was reduced.

2-second cuts in Help On The Way and Drums in the SBD are now patched. There's also a minuscule cut in Space that was patched.
