there are some very noticable level adjustments in this seed from Chalkdust through Taste. There is a patched version using a second mk4v FOB source. the patchwork was done per request of the taper. i will submit md5s and txt.

There are 4 file sets circulating related to shnids #19640 and #19821

Source 1: #19640 - the original source
Source 2: a source noted by Rob Berg in a comment for #19640, not in the database
Source 3: #19821 - a fixed version of #19640 in the database
Source 4: a source not in database which also claims to be a fixed version of #19640

All 4 sources have same checksums for set 2. They only differ for set 1 checksums.

Source 2 - using st5’s created from source 1 we can show that Source 2 noted by Rob Berg (who listed flac ffp’s in his comment) differs in waveform only in 2 tracks:

ph03-07-30d1t06-fixed CDT
ph03-07-30d2t02.flac Taste

Source 2 appears to be more akin to a shntool header and sbefix. d2t2 differs by 1104 bytes which is the amount the original track was sector misaligned according to shntool. Source 1 d1t6 also had a large header 4096 bytes compared to 44 bytes for source 2. Listening to source 2 it does not appear to be different from source 1.

This comment was left for #19640 (source 1) by allen (aka guy4get)

“there are some very noticable level adjustments in this seed from Chalkdust through Taste. There is a patched version using a second mk4v FOB source. the patchwork was done per request of the taper. i will submit md5s and txt.”

Source 3 : shnid #19821 in db has this note in it’s info file:

“some patchwork: chalkdust->taste was mixed/patched with a second mk4v FOB source to try and
fix some very noticable level adjustments. Handywork done once again by Matt "Shakedown".
the resident etree IRC mixmaster!!”

From the source 3 info file note I was expecting perhaps at most only tracks from CDT (d1t6) to Taste (d2t2) inclusive to show changes.
But every track in set 1 for #19821 has different checksums compared to #19640.

Allen (aka guy4get) is linked to #19821 noting explicitly it is the fixed version of #19640.
So #19821 is assumed to be the fixed version using a patched source as foretold by Allen.

Source 4 is a fixed version not in the database. It has this comment in its info file:

“fix notes: there are level adjustments in both Chalkdust Torture and Taste, I did my best to fix these with the vector volume tool in WaveLab's Audio Montage function, but it's certainly not perfect. The most noteable flaw is at the beginning of Taste. -shakedown”

The md5’s for this source differ in all set 1 checksums from both the original #19640 and from the fix #19821.

From the fix notes I again expected only CDT and Taste tracks to be changed, not all of set 1.
But all set 1 tracks have changes from original in timing as shown in the shntool output.

Summary:

There are 3 different fixed versions of the original version Source 1 #19640.

Source 2 - referenced by Rob Berg differs from the original only in the 2 tracks mentioned in fix descriptions - CDT & Taste.
It is not in the database. It appears to be more of a “shntool” fix than attempts to improve the volume fluctuations noted in the other info files. Its checksums are added to the original shnid #19640.

Source 3 - the fixed version in the database (#19821) differs from original in all set 1 tracks. I do not have access to this file set at time this was written. If Allen’s description is correct it is a patched/mixed version.

Source 4 - not in database, has all set 1 tracks changed from original in at least their timing. It appears to be a fix that is not patched /mixed but adjusts the original volume using a software option in Wavelab. However, all track lengths have changed so perhaps the tracks were combined for set 1, volume adjustments made to the whole set 1 waveform, then it was retracted.

Since Source 4 circulates as #19640, only differs in set 1 tracks as does #19640 and notes its a fix from “shakedown” I have added it as an alternate fixed version using shnid #19821.
