Digital encoding and DBX decoding by Rob Eaton
CD editing and mastering by The Wizard - Owenbrothersvault@hotmail.com

Here is how Rob did his part:
Master 1/2 trk 7" reels @7.5ips (DBX encoded)->
PCM beta digital->Sony 2500 dat->
DB Technologies DB3000S for digital emphisis decode->
DB Technologies 924 for D->A conversion->
Dolby 361 modules W/K9-22 DBX cards for DBX decode->
Neve Capricorn Digital mixing colsole (24 bit/ 32bit floating point
processing (for level adjustment)->
Panasonic SV4100 Pro Dat recorder (master Decode Dat)->
Master Clone (panasonic Sv3700->Sv3800 via AES interlink)

Here is what the Wiz did:
Rob's DAT clone>Tascam DA-20 mkII>Digital Audio Labs Card Deluxe>WAVE>
Diamond Cut Audio DC-6 (for editing)>WAVE>CD and SHN.

Here is what was used for the AUD patches:
AudMC > DAT > Soundforge > CDWAV > SHN
Taper: Steve Rolfe Sony ECM 33P mic > TC-152 deck
A > D transfer by Noah Weiner - November, 2001
AudMC played back on a Nakamichi MR-1 > Fostex D5 (A>D only)
Soundforge was used for normalizing and editing.

Note: US Blues encore from an unknown SBD source. DBX reel source was unusable.

Summary of editing:
Rob's decode was masterful and made my job easy.  Nothing was done to the sound
of the DBX decoded material. Just cleaned up a few issues and made AUD patches.
Cut after Peggy-O cleaned up - Aud source cut there also so no patch available...
Over the top guitar chord at start of Half-Step toned down a bit to save ears...
Two small gliches in Half-Step repaired.
Cut in Tuning after Tennessee Jed patched with AUD source.
Two small pops in Music corrected.
Tuning at start of Set Two patched from AUD source.
Small glich in Estimated repaired
Cut in Tuning after Estimated patched with AUD source.
Pop in Wharf Rat corrected.
Cut in Around and Around patched with AUD source.
Cut in Crowd before encore patched from AUD source.
About 10 bad pops removed from US Blues and it was Equalized
and gain adjusted to better match up with the rest.
All AUD patches were sonically adjusted to better match up and cross-faded
in to prevent a jarring change.

Hissier than the previous version, no?

I wouldn?t call it hissier but perhaps a bit more ambience. I think it sounds absolutely terrific!

In any case, my sources tell me Jay Ashley wasted no time...

If there is a Jay Ashley version in circ, do submit the info here.

The Bertha remaster is up on TOL. Textfile here: http://tol.etree.org:8888/textfiles/gd1977-05-07.xxxxx.txt Not that I can understand why on earth this had to be done with that already great sounding source...

Well, now I'm sure this source is hissier than the prior one. I'm a little surprised considering the fantastic version of 5/8/77, which must rank as the greatest upgrade I've ever heard, easily on par with the greatest of Dick's Picks.

Of course, I love patches, so that's cool, but I may do a little EACing on my own.

Jay's is now listed at 26361, thanks guys! Meanwhile an anon user asked in a deleted post, paraphrased: Why EAC given that that's not a noise removal tool?
Date: 10/21/2004
I was thinking about mixing in the new patches into the old source using EAC. That kind of thing is a hobby of mine, and my first attempt was 11/17/72 (see the comments and link to an accompanying vine in one of those sources). I like to EAC using the append wav feature to get the best quality and/or most chronologically accurate and patched show. But first a more comprehensive comparison between the two sources, and that will have to way till a weekend or vacation time.

Eaton remastered this to cut down on the boomy low end sound the old source had. I guess that?s why it seems "hissy", the clarity and ambience has been enhanced. To the better, IMO. I listened to the Bertha and it basically brings back what the old source had. So you could be off smooth by just getting the Bertha, and you?ll still have the patches + the old boomy low end present.

I don't know, maybe it's my speakers, but it sounds hissy and a little muffled to me. Then I threw in 5/8 and it's no comparison. So much better. I'd be interested to know how you think 5/7 compares to the Eaton 5/8.
Date: 10/22/2004
User: Alex
I don?t think it?s your speakers, my theory is that they?re quite different to begin with. 5/7 needed that low-end removed to make room for the clarity and I still think that?s where the "hissy" sound comes from, the enhancing of the overall ambience. 5/8 didn?t need the same remastering, if I?m not totally wrong here. That said I still think the result for Eaton?s 5/7 is exceptional and it sounds great, especially turned up a bit. Both remasters are terrific, IMO. And I?ve listened to the Bertha again and I still think that soundwise, you?re off just as good with the old SBD source, except for the patches of course. See you over at DNC L/K!

Be aware that Ashley did not start with Eaton's source for his "Bertha" remaster... He started with this source that I put together working with Rob.. He conveniently left out any reference to the work that I did on this source including the aud patches in his info file... also left out the transfer information... even directly copied parts of my info file and put them in his!

If this qualifys as a class act in the Dead trading world then I will not continue to make sorces like this widely available!

Duly noted in relevant entry, Wiz, thanks! BTW when contributing to the music flow in whatever capacity, think of the big pic of 1000's of people getting turned on to tunes with your help, not just about 1 or 2 people that might get under your skin. Works for me. :)

1. This source is not "hissier" than the original WBOTB? source at all. It is, however, significantly more clear-sounding, the instruments accordingly seem to be more distinct from one onother - especially Weir's guitar - and the drums, especially the bass drums, are nowhere near as thumpy or intrusive now.

2. THIS is the source that folks want if they want the best representation of the show I attended on 5-7-77, not the earlier thumpy versions and not any gilded lily versions from others who like to play with EQ and in the process just make it thumpy all over again.
