I was playing my last junior tennis tournament - Super Nationals in Kalamazoo, Michigan - and thus missed the entire second leg. I was playing real well and didn't think I'd make it to the second week, but I did, and on the 11th I was faced with a problem. I had two matches that day, if I won the first, I would have to take a plane back a day later (and probably wouldn't have gotten into Coventry in hindsight). I won the first match, best win of my career, and defaulted out of the tournament since I had a festival to catch. No one understood it there, but I ended my junior tennis career out on it's highest note, and then capped it off with a weekend in Vermont. Anyway, we took out a map and took the back roads to Coventry. Had we taken 91, we wouldn't have made it since we left the morning after Camden, where the rest of my friends had gone.
Musically, the shows were an indication of the end of an era, but in spirit, I feel like everyone there still got what they wanted - a good time. Listen to the plea "please me have no regrets" and you find what Phish came to Vermont to do. They came to play a show, end it the way they wanted to, without regrets. Just like I have no regrets about leaving that tournament, no one there should have any regrets, least of all the band.

The way the band (specifically Trey) kept screwing up the more complex material, it seemed only right that the end had come. You could hear the frustration and emotion bottled up there on the stage. I enjoyed the concert but it was bittersweet, a good dancin' boogyin' time yet a sorrowful time knowing it was the end of an era. I had first seen Phish in a bar in Burlington in 1990 and they blew me away. They were everything I was looking for in a band. And then when I heard about the imminent break-up, I cut off from work and drove 1,400 miles to be there at the end. It seemed only fitting to return to Vermont to say good-bye.
