I had recorded Merl through the board with my D5 the previous night at Loco Ranchero in San Luis Obispo, and I jumped at the chance to see the band again so I drove to Santa Barbara. The night before, in SLO, I had met Michael Brand, a taper from New York, who patched his D5 out of mine. Michael spent the night at my place and copied some of my shows and I saw him at the Brew House. I had known Merl's manager Marina since the band played at Loco Ranchero in '92 and they were very open to soundboard recording. However, at the Brew House, only Michael's D5 was allowed board access. I had to sit through the first song or two before Michael was able to give me a patch on the sly. So, my D5 master is missing the first couple of songs. Merl always put on a great show and I was glad to get to see and record him once again. 'Blues From The Rainforest' always gives me chills. I wished I could have seen Merl play with Jerry in Legion Of Mary.
