CommentFrom It was a dark and stormy night at the Matrix in '67 ... Jerry, Jorma,
Jack, Pig, Unknown drummer - Kidd Candelario supposedly said it's Mickey
Hart; or maybe it's Spencer Dryden. We know it's Tuesday as the one
dose (oops - I meant disc) has the title 'Tuesday Night Jam'. But we
don't know a whole lot else. Wholly molly, Batman (or insert apropos
superhero character nom-de-plume here)!@#$%&!!! - is this oldie but
goodie 33 years on? To listen to this disc you wouldn't know it. Except
that it's great. And that you get to be *almost* the first person on
your block to own this recently circulated gem.
This is something resembling a setlist:
Tuesday Night Jam at the Matrix - 1967
Total time: 53:55
SBD> MR> DAT> CDR
Caveat emptor: The disc isn't perfect. It's a 33-year-old performance,
for crying out loud ;-)
There are tape flips and cuts.

brief, Spanish Jam-like theme. It also contains many hints of Caution (Do Not

"The setlist that Deadlists has listed for 10/9/68 is really 10/10/68. The
Sets are also backwards. This is the correct setlist for 10/10/68. I made
this off of the CDs that Bill Gadsden sent me, which were made from his
reels. His reels came from Peter Abram's reels, which were either Masters or

CommentThejerrysite.com: "It's worth noting that at the prior incarnation of this lineup, in October 1968, the "group" was billed as "Jerry Garcia and Friends" and the name "Mickey Hart And The Hartbeats" comes from some onstage banter by Garcia, and no one had thought twice about how the name should be spelled."
Deadlists.com: The tapes circulating with this date are from a "Heartbeats" show, without Bobby and Pigpen. (1) with Jack Casady and Spencer Dryden. (2) with Jack Casady and David Getz. This contains a lengthy "The Creator Has a Master Plan" theme and has references to Dark Star, Clementine, and China Cat Sunflower. An extensive search through the old San Francisco Chronicle newspapers failed to turn up any evidence of this event - no advertisements, no announcements in the "on the town" column etc. Bill Gadsden said he copied from Peter Abram "two reels with 45 minutes apiece of Garcia, Spencer Dryden, Cassady, Getz, etc from 12/16/68". A third jam has previously circulated as "Set 3" of this date, but Bill says that it's "with Harvey Mandel from 12/24/68".

Comment"Hartbeats 1968 Mystery Fragments". Some notes from the circulating copy:
Notes:
I asked Michael Parrish for a copy of the mystery fragment reviewed in the taping compendium. This tape also included another fragment not reviewed in the compendium and was labeled 11 1 68, which is most likely incorrect.
* Here?s what Parrish supplied for source / lineage info: ?Both of these pieces came in a cassette that Dwork sent me near the beginning of the compendium project. As I noted, track #2 corresponds to the first track of your "Mystery Disc" and I have never heard the other piece anywhere other than on the Dwork tape. It rang no bells with Dick L. either.?
^ ?The fragment I sent you as ?11/1/68? is the same as the first track on your Mystery Show CD. I wouldn't necessarily bet that either is 11/1/68 though:)?
Review by Michael Parrish: ?This mysterious fragment consists of another version of the jam that opens 10/30/68. It is notable for Garcia?s inspired and frenetic soloing, which has a rather unusual Latin feel.?

This is Crosby, Garcia, Lesh & Hart, sometimes known as
David And The Dorks. 12/17/70 is of the band in performance;
it may be a complete set. 12/15/70 is part of a soundcheck or rehearsal, almost certainly a tape run by the band for work purposes (as we know was Jerry's practice); reportedly there is a 49 minute version of this rehearsal tape also in circulation, but unexamined at this writing. DeadBase IX lists gigs by these musicians at the Matrix on December 15, 16 & 17, billed as "Jerry Garcia & Friends."

CommentThis is the afternoon rehearsal for the evening show that is already available on FuthurNet. I got this in 1973 from the master reel. The box did not give a date, just a month and year. There are actually 2 dates going around for the show (12/20/70 & 12/15/70). I'm using the 12/20 date since that seems to be the more accepted date. I played a few cuts from this on David Gans' Dead Head Hour, but here is the whole rehearsal intact.
Note: This recording contains the only version of 8 Miles High, since they didn't play it during the evening show. Also, the box did not list the drummer, and I have assumed it to be Bill Kreutzmann all these years just because of the playing style.
