Papa Grows Funk
CommentWith an all-star line-up featuring Russell Batiste, Jr. (Funky Meters; Vida Blue), John Gros (George Porter, Jr.'s Runnin' Pardners), Jason Mingledorff (Galactic), June Yamagishi (Wild Magnolias), Peter V. (Cyril Neville) and Marc Pero, Papa Grows Funk has grown from a weekly Monday night jam-session at New Orleans' Maple Leaf Bar into a national touring act with a coast to coast fan base. Recently voted Best Funk Band by New Orleans' Big Easy Awards and Offbeat Magazine, Papa Grows Funk is the funkiest act to emerge from the Crescent City in years, a throwback to the bluesy, stripped-down sound of New Orleans' pioneering instrumental group, The Meters.

Northwest Women In Rhythm & Blues
CommentTo celebrate Women in Blues, Sunday, July 6, Portland guitarist Sonny Hess rounded up a great revue of Northwest blues women, including: LISA MANN on bass and vocals, drummer SUE ORFIELD, vocalists KID LOPEZ, LINDA HORNBUCKLE, MEGAN JAMES, LADY KAT, & special guest, MARIANNE MAYFIELD.

Originally from San Francisco, Mayfield was a fixture on Portland's jazz and blues club circuit through the '70s and '80s, working as both a vocalist and bassist with such Rose City stalwarts as drummer Mel Brown, pianist Geoff Lee, and bassist Leroy Vinnegar. Mayfield spent a decade in Hawaii, gigging regularly in the island clubs as well as appearing at major events like the Maui Jazz Festival before returning to Oregon in 2001.

CommentNorman Sylvester — "The Boogie Cat" — returns to the main stage with his funky, soulful revue, Friday, June 30. Sylvester purveys his own brand of blues, blended with soul and funk. He's supported by a basic unit of keyboardist Janice Scroggins, bassist Rob Shoemaker, and drummer Ashbolt Stewart, but variety comes from augmenting the group at times with as many as five horns, a group of backup vocalists that includes Sylvester's daughter Lenanne, a middle-school chorus, organist Dover Weinberg, harpist Bill Rhoades, or singer LaRhonda Steele.

Johnny Rawls
CommentJohnny Rawls, a favorite at the festival five years ago, has been called “the Little Milton of the 21st Century.” Born and raised in Mississippi's rural Gulf Coast area, this multi-talented guitarist, soul singer, and songwriter spent two decades as a sideman to many of the top blues/soul masters, including Little Johnny Taylor, and O.V. Wright.

Rawls appears with his revue on the Festival main stage on Saturday, July 1, and contributes his righteous guitar chops to Linda Hornbuckle's Gospel segment on Sunday afternoon.

CommentMaking their third appearance at the Waterfront Blues Festival, "Jersey Soul" features the distinctive style of popular Portland guitarist Kenny Lavitz and the soulful vocals of New York's Judy Tint. Kenny is a mainstay at clubs, festivals and special events on the Northwest music scene, and a featured artist on local radio, appearing regularly as a solo artist and with his blues/funk/jazz project, the Kenny Lavitz Kombo. The Oregonian says of Kenny, "Blues, rock, jazz, you name it, this guitarist can play them all in grand style; whether playing solo or with his band, he can really deliver." His latest album, "Too Many Hats," highlights his impeccable musicianship and clever songwriting.Joining Kenny is singer (and music lawyer) Judy Tint, a New York native and part-time Portlander who has made many East Coast club appearances with her band, "Jude and the Dudes," as well as having toured with The Four Tops, and sung background and played percussion with numerous R&B greats. She brings a sultry mix of bluesy covers and select originals, as well as a mean tambourine. Judy is particularly pleased to be appearing to benefit the Oregon Foodbank, having originated an online charity drive, supported largely by music fans, which has provided well over one million meals to date through programs including The Foodbank for New York City, The Community Foodbank of New Jersey, and America's Second Harvest. Rounding out "Jersey Soul" are Portland stand-outs Dave Fleschner on keyboards, Tim Bly on saxophone, Willie Barber on bass, and Donnie Worth on drums.

The pioneers of blues-rock-boogie return to the Waterfront Blues Festival.

Canned Heat was founded in 1966 by blues historians and record collectors Alan "Blind Owl" Wilson and Bob "The Bear" Hite. The band gained international attention and secured its niche in the pages of rock 'n roll history with its performances at the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival (with Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and The Who) and the headlining slot at the original Woodstock Festival. Wilson was already renowned for his distinctive harmonica work when he accompanied veteran bluesman, Son House, on his rediscovery album, "Father of the Blues."

Hite took the name Canned Heat from a 1928 recording by Tommy Johnson. They were joined by Henry "The Sunflower" Vestine, another ardent record collector and fret-board wizard, who was a former member of Frank Zappa's Mothers of Invention. Rounding out the band in 1967 were Larry "The Mole" Taylor on bass, an experienced session musician, who had played with Jerry Lee Lewis and The Monkees, and Adolfo "Fito" de la Parra on drums, who had played with The Platters, The Shirelles, T-Bone Walker and Etta James.

Now, 40 years later and with almost that many albums to its credit, Canned Heat is still going strong. Anchored by drummer/band leader Adolfo "Fito" de la Parra (a member since 1967), Canned Heat carries the boogie-blues it made famous into the 21st century. Its current lineup features Fito on drums; Greg Kage on bass and vocals; Robert Lucas on guitar, vocals, and harmonica; and Barry Levenson on guitar.
